I went to the computer store where I bought my computer and ask them how much a floppy drive cost. They said there are no more floppy drives anymore.
I ask them," How do you make a Start up disk?" They didn't know. Guess I will have a lot to learn.
Guess that means I won't be able to get an 800k floppy drive for my Mac either.
Planned obsolesence.

I still have my start up disk, thank god I'll never have to use it because it's not the 90's.

This thread's title:

Think I just dated myself

I assumed this thread was about an embarrassing accident involving on-line dating.

But it seems I was wrong.

I thought of that when I named it.
Meant that I sort of showed my age.

As for making a lot of threads.. Wait until you retire and have all your time to yourself. ( Nothing much else to do but go on the forums.)

I retire at the end of this month - will soon be counting hours not days.

But I certainly won't have the time all to myself - this forum (and our very hirsute garden) keep me very busy.

This forum and taking care of Mother-in-law(82?) and running everyone around take my time as well as my 5 year old.

The first thing that sprung to mind when I read the topic title.

Unless I'm missing something, why not buy an external drive online?

Can't you make a memory stick into a start up disk?

That was suggested by my wife. I may have to resort to that.

Is there a junkyard near where you live? Or I could send you mine... Matters where you live...

Fear not, startup discs can still be made, they are just discs not disks ow - these days you make a startup disc using either a DVD,CD or Blu-Ray.

Your first problem is that you went into a computer shop and expected to speak to someone with a clue . Seriously, the only reason that there are still these creepy little PC shops is that people = idiots, and mafia = 'need money laundered'.

You might even be able to plug that thing into your mac, if mac's can take those standard USB floppy drives then your laughing. I'd be tempted to take it to the PC store, wave it around all mystic like, use it to hammer some sense into the sales peoples skulls.

My first thought was rather more bizarre than that.

That video has given me an idea ...

Is that to become a Pop-star?
Or to buy all of the P!NK Albums?

I dated myself once, we talked for hours but I didn't like the sleeping arrangements.

Don't make fun of floppy drives, I just used mine last night to format and installed windows 98. (shutup, I have my reasons!)

I was just joking about the old mac 800k drives. I bought a mac back in 1997-1998 in Germany. It had one of the old 800k drives in it. I later found out that the reason it was so cheap was that drive was going out and was not going to be replaced.
I probably won't look for another floppy drive. I have an old computer with one in it now. I could use one of those or just buy one at the used store.

That sounds like a Hollywood script about a multiple-personality disorder patient that blacks out from time to time and emails himself seductive messages to his own online dating profile. Only to hilariously find out it was himself all along at the end.

Get on it writers.

Ye, honestly, I can't think of anything you'd use a startup disk for these days except for a classic computer

For example, a dos diskette is almost worthless since most drives are NTFS these days. Anything else is pretty much available for CD startup disks. Need memtest? That can be downloaded in ISO form. Need a restore disk? Well, ain't no operating system this last 10 years fit on a floppy. Need a repair disk? That's on your windows disk already.

Check a small mom and pop computer shop tho, they'll have floppies if you really must have one.
