I found a great tutorial over on the Game-Artist.net forums that teaches about normal mapping. It shows you how to make a 3D die and normal map it using both high-poly baking and editing it in with Photoshop.

http://www.game-artist.net/forums/spotlight-articles/43-tutorial-introduction-normal-mapping.html

Apologies if this is the wrong forum to post this in.

[Edit] Here's a comparison between normal-mapped and high-poly. Which is which?

yeah I'd vote high poly on right.

dunno if it's the texture or what, but the normal mapping here looks to have a good bit more depth than on the render in your other post

The one on the right is definitely the high-poly one. You can tell if you look at the dots on the top of it.
