I'm a minor years old and am looking for a job. I play guitar alot, and i've been learnining some kind of jazzy, background kind of music (like signe by eric clapton or belle by jack johnson). One of my friends suggested to me that i could make money by playing guitar at parties.

I have a couple of jacks like this for converting quarter inch cables used with electric guitars, into eighth inc headphone cables.

I figure i could have a setup to play music from my computer, from the guitar, and from a microphone, all at the same time:
1. Have the electric guitar and microphone hooked together, and put into the mike input on my laptop.
2. Have guitar effects (reverb and what not) handled on the computer, along with the playing of the backing track, or whatever music is playing.
3. Add the two together, and send it out to my guitar amplifier set to a clean tone.

I might have to do a bit of programming and circuitry to wrap it all together, but i think if i could get this done i could set up at parties, and have professional sounding music playing.

What i want to do is finish a system and hook everything up like described, and get a large music library to play (so that when someone asks for a song, i'll have it). I've already learned enough material to play solo for about half an hour straight, and i know enough chords to play filler material, so that's not a problem. I'll have plenty of time to work on this since it's summer vacation, so time's not an issue. I also have most of the necessary cables, and know where to get the ones i don't have. The only problem is the computer side of the thing. Would i need something special? I think i could just have Itunes up and running, and find or write a program which sent the mike in to audio out, and then the sound card's mixer would handle the rest for me, but im not sure.

Those jack adapters are great at lifting jacks off circuit boards, so don't put any pressure on them. They have a lot of leverage on what is actually a pretty weak component.

Wait a sec, everything's going through the amp? Is the amp also dealing with distortion?

Though when you say DJing, what kind of DJing are you referring to? Playing the music or mixing it? Getting successful at mixing is like being in a successful band. Playing music can get you a job at a nightclub.

I'm not sure what money there is in this industry. DJing you might have better chances with (or doing both) - though I'm not sure how many make a career out of it. A few of my friends are nightclub DJs and I've done some radio DJing myself, I've tried getting into a club and doing it, but so far unsuccessful. My DJ friends DJ at events and Nightclubs to get a bit extra money whilst they're studying, but I don't know what money you'll be earning yourself if you wanted to do it professionally. If you're talking about 'mixing' as a DJ, like my friend DJ Gooders, then your chances of getting money at the same as if you had a band.

For guitar stuff, I'm clueless.
