there's two ways i know of to do it depending on the program and your skills. one is a program that lets you draw directly onto the model some modeling programs have this built in. the other is to UV map it and then draw it onto that texture. this can take a long time for high quality work plus learning to UV map. there are several ways to UV map it also depends on what program you are using.

some programs i know of that let you draw directly on the model are
Zbrush, cinema 4D, i believe blender has it but im not positive on that.

there are two ways to UV map other then by hand that i know of. on is using a seam. i know blender has this. there are some programs you can buy that have it. not sure of any others.

then there's just using box, spherical ect. most modeling programs support this method.

feel free to correct me if im wrong

Azunaki is correct. I would not, however, suggest drawing on the model directly. I have never really had a nicely finished model done this way.

Each model will have an efficient way of texturing it depending on its shape and the level of detail you want. A crate, for example, only needs a "UVW Map" modifier with a box map applied to it if you want all 6 sides the same. However, a more complex model will probably need an "Unwrap UVW map" modifier applied.

For the latter, I would suggest doing a google search for this. Doing this gave me this site:

http://waylon-art.com/uvw_tutorial/uvwtut_01.html

This is a good tutorial for unwrapping a model for texturing with lots of info and pictures to follow. This is the way I do it, and I usually get some nice results. I use 3DS Max 8, but this tutorial and the techniques can probably be applied to any version.
