Well hello there, old chap!

Say, you wouldn't happen to know what might be causing this little problem of mine?

My computer won't boot! Or more like, it won't even go through the post check! In other words, I am unable to enter BIOS.

(This all happened after I installed Vista again (for dualbooting with Ubuntu) but I got (who would've guessed?) a bluescreen and had to restart).

However, I am sometimes able to enter the BIOS menu, load my pre-defined settings which I know works (because I had this problem before, when I bought the motherboard). But when I press "save and exit" it just freezes.

So what did I do?

Well, I reset the cmos of course!
Did this solve my problem? No. Did it make it worse? Yep.

I now get "check sum unavailable" or something, and it asks me to press either F1 for setup or F2 for "load optimized settings".
Problem: It freezes again.

I used to get a "Unknown bios error 0002" message (sometimes, not always) but the MSI website doesn't seem to know what this means.

My conclusions:
1) The motherboard is broken.
2) the cmos battery is broken.
3) I shouldn't have overclocked the CPU (rather the FSB), as this seems to have caused a side effect now.
4) ?????
5) Profit.

Any ideas?

I should probably mention my computer specs: (but I don't remember what I have)

Oh yea, and sometimes I don't get a picture on my monitor.
Sometimes it freezes after it registers the gpu.

I think I have "Award" bios.

Edit,
As a fun sidenote, I broke my skateboard today (I went out to skate after I failed to repair the computer).
So now I have absolutely nothing to do!

Well.. I am going to watch some movies (I finally have vacation!!)

Ok I got to admit that was pretty funny.

that just might be why, you over clocked .6ghz

GG,
Hahaha. Looks like his day was worse than mine though.

Hockeykid,
The reason I bought the Q6600 was because of the fact that it is able to run stable at 3.0ghz.
The only problem as far as I am concerned is that the motherboard wasn't able to keep up. Maybe.
So in a sense you are right.

Or maybe it got too hot, over clocking makes things a lot hotter. Do have a laptop or desktop?

I think it's the harddisk. If it is older than 5 years, I would check that out. That was the problem I had when I got a really old computer.

Oh yeah: Round two for me.

Well if its a desktop I would suggest opening it up, check to see if anythings melted.

Sounds like when i had some trouble installing new ram. I also have Value select ram sticks. If you have more than 1 ram sticks try removing some of them and leave only 1, then if your computer boots it's either the ram or the motherboard.

Hockeykid,
I am not saying that you are incorrect or anything. You may be as correct as I am, but I still don't think it is the processor.

The Q6600 (well, the model I have at least. There are two different makes of the Q6600) should be able to run 3.0ghz at stock cooling fan and cooling paste, without a problem.

An interesting note to take is that lately it's been very warm outside. And my apartment (I live with my parents still :/) isn't air conditioned, so we have around 30degrees Celsius in the living room, where my computer is located. Add that to the fact that the processor runs at about 56.5degrees (the four cores runs at different warmth), and an ambient temperature of about 40 inside the case (I checked, when the computer still worked) and the conclusion is that with a room temperature of 30, the computer must logically run hotter than normal. Right?

So yes, you might be correct.

Or I might be wrong in my deduction regarding room temperature and computer case temperature relations.

TheCometn,
I accidentally unplugged the harddisk power cable, lol, so I plugged it in. Now it works.
Not.

But yea, I thought about that. However, my computer parts are relatively new (less than a year old) so it cannot be age.

It could maybe be a broken SATA cable? I'll check that out later (currently watching "The Bank Job;" I just love Jason Statham!).

I have also tried to remove one memory stick, and run with only one in the different modules of the moderbard. That didn't solve anything.
I'll try out a different graphics card later as well.

Hmm, It could be the PSU failing.. After all, sometimes the keyboard or mouse doesn't light up; indicating that they are not receiving any power.

Sorry, I accidentally a long post.

Edit,
yea it's a desktop. (custom built. took me half a year to acquire the parts! I don't get much in salary unfortunately )

Edit,
Lucifer,
When I got the memory ram sticks the computer wouldn't work if I used both of them at the same time.
Solution: Under-clock them to 800mhz (was 1066mhz) and set voltage to 1.8v (was 2.2v for some ODD reason, MSI CLEARLY(!) stated that the motherboard required 1.8v modules. So I have NO idea why it was factory formatted to 2.2v.

Edit,
Anyway, I can't be bothered with this any more!

Does anyone know if you can move one CPU from one motherboard to another? Would you need to buy new cooling paste? or would the old one still function properly?
I'm settling for a new motherboard. ASUS this time, clearly MSI isn't for me.

Well, as nobody answered yet I will assume that it was a stupid question.

After all, the cooling paste would be smothered all over the CPU after the heat sink is removed; resulting in an uneven layer of paste. It would be obvious to buy a new tube of cooling paste, after cleaning the heat sink and CPU with some form of alcohol. Right?

kthxfortehhalp!
