Hey everyone,

I'm a bit new to this but i'm really stuck and need your ideas please! I have a friends birthday coming up soon and he'll be 18.. I can't afford to spend lots on him, £25 max. But i can't find presents anywhere!

He's a geek and that's all there is to him, he doesn't have any other hobbies so to speak.. He spends all his life at his laptop and is a typical geek. So if you could give me some idea's i'd really appreciate it please??

New mouse(Like a razor) or a new Keyboard(Like again, a razer), or a game or two... Like counter-strike or something else that'll please him...

No one knows just what has become of her, Shattered, dull, desperate, oh so innocent and delicate. But too damn obdurate, And obstinate to let go!

What kind of computer geek is he? I suppose anything to make the computer geekiness more comfortable to do will probably score. A decent mouse and keyboard can do that - if he doesn't any kind of digital art (3D or 2D) a decent mouse is quite handy as they're precise, I didn't realize how good a decent mouse was until I lost mine, my replacement is quite shaky when tried to 3D model or do some 2D art.

A good computer game might be good if you know what computer games he likes. If he does programming, like C++, then a decent book to do with C++ might do it.

Either that or a witty T-Shirt that highlights his geekiness. (assuming he has a sense of humour)

^ If you have quite a bit of time to wait for shipping (might be quite pricey though)

My friend got me a usb cup warmer which I think is the best geek present I've ever had. I never need to leave my pc anymore for warm coffee.

Well, i thought about the USB tea warmer and he doesn't ever drink warm drinks.. which is odd cause i thought all geeks drank coffee late at night...

We've got him geek t-shirts in the past and my personal fave was the mouse mat i got him saying !(geek!=sexy) which went down a storm!

He does code, but he's never read a book in his life I don't think so unfortunately a coding book would be out of the question..

OOH! Hackers on DVD? Maybe? I love that film even though i didn't really get it when i first watched it hehe.

I had a good look on think geek earlier.. I wanted a rock paper scissors lizard spock t-shirt for myself! But everything was so expensive

3 most geekiest things I got in the last year or so:-
1. A pen that is a bit like a swiss army knife and unscrews to have scissors, blades, screwdrivers, the lot
2. A keyboard that glows different colours
3. A device that is brilliant in 3D apps (can't remember the name - I'm in work - but it allows you to zoom in/out, rotate etc with it and use the mouse with the other hand)

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

The only problem with the 3DConnexion is the drivers. They're so limited, it's stupid. I want to be able to use it as a normal USB joystick too for incompatible software, but noooo, we've gotta be total asses and give you a propietary interface that doesn't work properly and stop you installing third party drivers!

It's not particularly geeky but one thing I can't recommend enough is the box set of Peep Show for less than £20 from play.com. It's sure to make him laugh. Linky.

Or for a slightly geekier comedy, you could go for series 1-3 of The I.T. Crowd, again for less than £20. Here.

Both ideal geek comedy DVD's Soapy, I'd actually have to think about which I'd rather have .

The way I see it, he probably plays PC games, like CS and Battlefield, as he's a geek, and that's a geek thing to do. Anyhoo nobody ever buys me audio equipment, even though it's where I'm most likely to spend daft money, well as daft as my spending gets, £80 for in-ear phones is pretty daft IMO .

Anyway if it was my birthday, I'd rather have something that I just wouldn't buy for myself, unlike a keyboard and mouse - these are things that most geeks prefer to choose for themselves, even trying to outdo their friends by having the sweetest setup. If you don't care about your keyboard and mouse then you've been miss-diagnosed as a geek. As I was saying I'd much rather get something like this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-HS-Fatal1ty-Gaming-Headset/dp/B000P5VR16/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1246971199&sr=1-22

Nice little gaming headset from creative - £25, and don't listen to other people telling you what he likes and doesn't like, decent headphones are always useful gifts, especially if you can use them for game comms, skype, MSN, or whatever floats his boat.

Other than that I would only suggest something daft, like a USB desktop scud launcher.

Give him the 25 pounds and he will spend it on whatever he needs.

To add to soapyfish's suggestions, you can get Black Books for quite cheap too, it is made by the same people as the IT Crowd - though the jokes many not be so orientated to the geek crowd, but it's very funny. (assuming he likes that thing - you should be able to see clips on youTube) if he likes Dylan Moran or Bill Bailey, then I suppose it's a must have for his collection.

Any seasons of 'That Mitchell and Webb Look' would be a good addition; if he likes the Peep Show, then he'd like this too - it has the same 2 comedians, except it is a sketch show.
