Not a game, but I have released commercial software. Not store bought, commercial custom software for each client.

Tho im hoping to eventually. Im not sure if it will be in DBPro, or BB. Im rather partial to BB for its extra speed, and the little bugs in Pro are annoying me. Tho im not giving up on Pro.

just remember that most of the "big" games have a team of people working on it. Usually 30 or 40 plus people for about 2 years. To get that kind of quality from one person could take some time. I am sure that a team of 40 or so could use DBPro to make a top notch game for the PC. I actually believe that with DBpro and other tools such as Cartography shop, wings3d, characterfx, etc. those 40 people could do a top notch game in half the time as normal and they could do it for a lot cheaper.

There have been a few commercial DarkBASIC games, but mostly alternative genre's and internet published. I don't think i've seen any shop bought DB games yet.

I did have a deal to write commercial games in DB, but the 'publisher' appears to have spoken enough hot air to get Richard Branson across the Atlantic Ocean again, so i'm currently making a new showcase game and after that we'll see...

look to the front page of the Pro section of the site and they list one as a commercial game (mahjong or something) and Starwraith is internet commercial and very good, you can also find Dead Glorys Pea Guy game on the Asock Ellipse now CD (or something like that), there may be others out there that are not declaring their colours though , saying a game is written in basic is a big put off for a lot of people, some publishers may be unwilling to say their game is in DB, after all the licence says you don`t have to declare what the title was written in, for all we know Doom III is written in DB classic, I doubt it, but it may be, maybe Carmack just needed a couple of dlls for the effects he wanted and the rest was in DB, that would be funny

Yeah I've come close...
I have 10 unfinished projects sitting on my hd, one was for a new games company. Pity it folded before I finished the game.
Ah who am I kidding the game was rubbish anyway.

NOTE to self: For the love of gravy, just finish a game!!!!

nice to see the one sided stories still alive, eh
you want some offhanded comments ... some developers said they'd have thier software done to beta point within the time that they wanted the money, yet 'producers' saw nothing by screenshots and very early alphas. And when said 'producer' tried to do the developers a favour stuck his neck out with a publisher for them just to have the company turn around and get all snitty about it without a word for what... 3weeks!

whats its oki to swindle a mate who isn't going to payup unless he sees results but as soon as it is an established company you have to deal with you run?

you wanna attack me then do it directly, but if your going to do it them damn'd well do it rather than hiding behind comments like that - all i did was try to make a bad situation better for you, i hear nothing from you with the beta, i hear nothing from the publisher after a few days ... i'm not going to put down my hard earnt cash on something that i was being kept in the dark about.
i thought i was financing one project i never saw any complete before you moved onto the next.

you wanna jerk me around with things then fine, you wanna get snitty about it leave it to a damn Ricki Lake show oki!
this is the exact BS i'm sick of hearing across the board ...

hear "ohh Raven hasn't done this..." or "this person who i'm not going to name but i'm gonna talk about in a way that its kinda obvious that its this person but because i don't name them you can't like be pissed at me for it" or "oh Raven wants to do this so lets see how many ways we can pick what he's doing apart"

tell ya what, ya'll come here and be on the recieveing end of this BS for once - you help someone out to the point where you end up doing thier project and without realising it you are the ONLY one doing the project.
or how about having people who say they'll help you and and right at the last minute bail with alot of the stuff you need leaving you with a deadline close and NOTHING to show for it.
Or how about having people agree to help you with something then just disappear from the face of the planet, leaving you to learn everything yourself and when they do finally get back they're like "oki so what can i help you with today?"

or some other BS from all of ya'll who quite frankly i hope ya'll like being stuck in your little ruts relying on others to get what you need, going no where and doing nothing.

and when i get into work on monday have a real desk job again, i think i'm gonna finally be happy again to be away from such a bunch of people who don't feel better unless thier being jerks or playing you behind your back or any other bull ... probably smug and all because you sit there thinking your right and Raven is wrong oh what a flipping glorius day, or because you've been able to zing me once again because ya don't really have lives so you hunt around on the internet trying to find proof of how next to show up Raven and make yourself look like some pathetic vindicitive person which doesn't matter because your right about something or atleast thats what the peice of paper says that you have infront of you, never actually realising that nothing has to do with being right or wrong - sit there thinking you have nothing new to learn, just that you need to teach always eh?
not even considering the possibility that maybe you could be wrong about something just once in your life or maybe the fact that there is no right or wrong in the information presented just the right and wrong of you present yourself.

proud moment for every internet junkie i suppose to find something in thier search engines that can act as kindling in a flamewar that they know thier starting but when the flames die down they'll look like the victor cause they have the paper that says thier right.

for a good 3minutes of gloating about it, not actually learning a thing other than how you can take more selective information to the point of any multimedia to stop from the learning experience and start on the fact of just a "i'm right, your wrong." state of mind.

i'm sure somewhere that this forum is still just as pleasent ans friendly as it was before Christmas. maybe next time i'm here someone can actually point out where, cause i must've missed it.

I plan on self-publishing my game. Currently working a small job here and there to earn some funds to do it. Plan on distributing my real creations on the internet. Here's about how much I think it takes to self-publish.

(prices in USD of course )
-I really have no ideas on establishing a business, or copyrights/trademark/patent prices.

-1CD 25 cents
-1manuel(well, if I include a very skinny manuel maybe that can be jammed inside the cd case)about $.50 - $1.00
-CD case $.50-$1.00

those are estimated prices so i'd guess around $2-3 per copy. Maybe if its boxed, with a decent 20-30 page manuel, about $5-$7.(depending on the fancy cover, and manuel size)

Also, if things are bought in bulk, maybe I could scratch off a couple cents per copy.

Hmmm, I figure if I make a decent game, sell 100 copies for $15.

100 * 2.50 = $250
$15 * 100= $1500.
$1500-$250= $1250.

Hmmm, now I have to subtract some money for copyrights/trademarks/patents.

$1250-$500(an estimate out of nowhere ) = $750.

Tax time!?!?!
$750 * .06(guesstimate on rate) = $45.

Alright!!!! $705!!!! hehehe, maybe in a year or so, I'll be earning some big bucks.

(Check my math)

Well, that's about how much money it could cost to self-publish, and how much money you'd about earn. Most of these figures came out of nowhere, but that might give you some ideas about self-publishing. (now to find more copyright/trademark/all that other good legal stuff, information.)

Good to see all the DB Pro apologists out in full force again!

Since this is the DB Pro forum, I assume he is asking about DB Pro projects. So let's just answer truthfully shall we?

Has anyone come close to creating a commercial game?... No. (I've only seen shareware quality games so far)

Has any one even developed a game that copys doom, quake, flight sim, etc? No. (plenty of demos, but no full DB Pro games that I have seen)

As for DBC.. I have seen a handful of commercial quality games out there.. Check the showcase on this site.

I would do it different then self publishing, unless you can guarentee you can put in extra hours to make sure you supply great customer service, answer emails, fix bugs, etc.

If you cant go through www.garagegames.com or another shareware publisher who can handle alot of the work, while you do other work.

If you do self publish you could have online (web or in the game) manuals, with a read me to cover installation. Use Zip/Rar or another self extractor.

You can self publish off your website, have a 1gb a month DL for really cheap, 3GB for just a couple of bucks more. You need a website anyways.

Saves you CDs, Printed Manuals, Shipping etc.
Have a DEMO that can be activated to full copy with a code OR
Demo and Full Copy that can be customized with registration by you and DLed, then deleted off the site after the DL.

Honestly with everything i have going on (I write, work full time, I like to code games, wife), Id rather let someone else do a majority of the work, like Garage Games and let them take 25% or so.

Makes more sence to me, unless you create something that is amazing you wont sell more then a few hundred copies anyways.

Yea, I know what ya mean. I'm a student, so I'm really only busy with school for the most part. I suppose the best option is shareware. I still like to handle things myself, but garage games is a definite possibility. That's a bit in the future though, mayabe a 2-3 years or so too come ,before I'll worry about publishing products.

I'd wait until DBPro was a bit more extablished before even trying to sell something. Often if a developer enters into a contract with a publisher it could include a clause about promising to fix bugs found, etc.

However if DBPro bug turns up then the developer cannot fix the bug and could end up in serious legal trouble

'Children of Sivara' seems to be one of the best games I've seen in DB - I don't know much about it, but I think it might be made into a commercial game...

i kinda liked 8Towers alot... and it if Kain actually accepted outside help from an artist i reckon they could make that game truely awesome - i'm currently waiting for the DarkBASIC Pro rewrite. Just wish he'd keep us all informed about it more

personally i've never really seen a game that has had the ability to be commercially viable really - alot of Shareware that might make it as a budget, if it was with a few more titles.
But nothing with true depth really...

Fur Effect looks good and they seem to be big in the indi game scene, but there is currently no demo just a few screenshots.
Just a case really of waiting and seeing what actually becomes big, because i do know of 3 or 4 titles worked on my full teams who are hoping to make it big with thier games.
One of which is a Racing game which looks a dream, but there isn't much.

problem i see time and time again people seem to just get bored of thier projects like a month into them - so they stop and start something new. not much sticking power, coupled with the lack of willing DECENT artists (or programmers who are willing to work with an artist and not with themselves) tends to equate to very little.

I guess it depends on what you mean with "commercial" games.

As far as I know lots of people sell their games, so that makes them commercial. Are you asking "will Half-Life 3" be written in DB Pro? Then the answer is a definite no.

I don't think DBPro has the muscle (being basic and thus quite slow) to cut it in the upper echelons of the computer game biz. For that you need C++ and/or assembler.

i wouldn't say definately not... you've only seen what amature programmers can do with it.
i've seen what experienced guys can do with it.

the results are HUGELY different, especially considering Valve have a team of 35people ... most developers here works as teams of 1-5 oftenly with no real skills in the area they're actually helping with, and just making it up as they go rather than working to a .plan

OK you want to air dirty laundry in public that is fine.

I placed every faith in you Raven to the extent that I spent two months of my life dedicated to developing for your nFinity project.

I developed one game to about 80% the other to about 30%. I contacted you at various times to keep you up to date although you did make several general announcements about not wishing to be told about what games we where workign on etc.

As one game neared completion I contacted you on MSN [and I have a log of the conversation aswell as our original conversation discussing the deal] to discuss publication, what I expected to do was get down to details.

Instead you fobbed me off to another publisher, told me you wheren't at FMTau anymore, told me the girl who runs FMTau is on holiday, and you told me I would have to direct all my questions to her.

That was the moment I realised what the nFinity project was hot air and decided to abandon it with regards to my own software carear. As I understand your recent 'board retirement' post it is now a scrapped project correct?

Even then I still held you in neutral regard and although i'm not about to rush out and sing your praises I have no made any statement or announcements about the situations that unfolded.

My comment above was a reflection of my situation, and I stand by it's accuracy and I stand by the spirit in which it was intended.

If you do have greviances with me, then please feel free to contact me via email or possibly MSN. However further deriding of me on a public board will merely leave me no option but to do it back, warts en all.

Thankyou for your time in reading and understanding this post.

Pneumatic i have alot of the conversation logs as well... if you have then then i'd suggest you look at what the original deal WAS.
and before you start making accusations that things are just hot air - just because i leave the people who are working on this machine & the production company is taken over doesn't mean that this wasn't true.

80% complete (although what i've tested weren't even close to 80% complete) isn't COMPLETE, and you wanna know something i barely have enough cash for my own rent here ... you want what i have, i have around $16 in my wallet which is about all the money i have to my name right now.

you want to know why? because my cash was tied up in that stupid company account which i don't get reimbursed for, so you want to bitch about how you don't have anything and you have to take on menial jobs try listening to several people bitch to you a day about what is going on, when all you can tell people is you don't have a flipping clue - add to this the fact that i have one professional company who are for some stupid reason looking at ME to flipping bail them out.

add to this i still don't have the cheque that i've been promised by MY publisher for the work i've shown them and the Expos that i've allowed them to showcase my work at, nor have i seen a single cent from nVidia for the work i've done for them.
(not that it stopped them quite forcably taking my old company away from me eh!)

when you finally supply even a single complete title then i'll see to showing you some green, until then i ain't damn charity ...
you said you were in sticky wicket and you needed cash - i did for you what i thought would give you the cash you needed, i made a personal request for it and what happens is a beta you said you'd send me in a few days turned into a week with NOTHING.

Making me look like a damn fool infront of another company, so how bad could you've needed that money if you have the ordasity to turn down an oppertunity to actually be damnd well published by a fairly respected UK Publisher??

you said you wanted to go pro, some how though when your given the chance to atleast have something financed by an experienced company and for retail shelves you bailed.
you were going to be published by Eidos Plantinum in the first place anyways, i dont' see the flipping difference.

and really your lucky that i even bothered, because you said 3months and you'd have 2-3titles complete. 2month you ask for money, i did what i felt was fair... instead its recieved with a slap - in a situation that a publisher would've just dropped you.
thats the difference here Pneu, i atleast tried to find you an alternative ... and it would've been nice to say "thanks but no thanks" or like "don't worry about it", but no i get you going silent on me then this bull.

this is exactly the kinda explaination right here to why i wanna just sit back and leave ya'll to it and just develop on my own again. sick of the bull

At no time did I demand money from you Raven. With a few days to go before being ready to deliver the goods I contacted you to make sure everything was in order and you gave me more excuses than a politician on heat, so I ceased development.

If in the future I decide I need an internet publisher then I will ask for references and find one. If they fob me off, then I will assume that they too dont want to publish the game, and i'll walk away and think no more of it.

That's the bottom line.

Oh and for the record, I 'walked away' during that conversation - the reason you heard no more from me after that in those weeks is because I had already heard the music and I dont want to waste my time flogging a dead horse. If you wanted to know more or find out why you where not getting anything then all you had to do was MSN or email me, or even put a post here asking for me to get in touch.

You did not do that, and I believe that was because your deal had all the sincerity of a drunken liason.

@the architect

I think your current work is pretty impressive myself. Any chance of you planning to release a commercial version of steel fittings (sorry if i butchered the name of the game).

If so, shareit, and garage games are some good choices
GG, is really close to being in stores, in a way that they have hihgh quality games and good marketing. If your game doesn't make it through GG, then shareit is prbly the next best option.
