you should do about 8 going around the handle. it makes it rounder. and more realistic. other then that its pretty good.

Honestly, I see no problem with the poly use of the blade. Maybe a little bit of beveling to round it off, but nothing major. A good texture could definitely make this into a perfectly acceptable piece.

Blender is pretty easy to use actually. I think it's mostly the UI that scare people away.

Yeah, i think Blender is easier than 3Ds Max, and those 2 modelers are the only one's i like to use, i use blender for making models, and i like to use 3ds max for things like lighting because it's a bit easier in that aspect. But using blender is easier to extrude, scale, and all that jazz.

Imho, Blender is the easiest, i made that model in a matter of a couple of minutes, it was the UV maps that had me pulling out my hair. But now i know how it works, it takes less than 10 minutes to make a pure color texture

the hand guard things? yeah, they are wood still, this is an old sword

EDIT:
Also i designed the weapon to be one handed, and you can stab people with the hilt of the sword quicker than you can swing, but it wouldnt hurt as much.

Yeah, if you bevel anything, you need to re-UV map it.

Well i've been modeling for my games, and the weapons are made by crafting, and i already wrote the crafting function out and all the recipies. This is the first dual attack weapon you can craft and it only requires Iron and Timber, adding more iron or crystals to improve the weapon would have to make it a level 2 item, which wont fit into the starter weapon.

Do you know how to use pins? Highlight the blade, hit P, then bevel it afterward. It keeps your main points from moving nomatter how it's unwrapped later.

Edit: In the UV window

Prettey nice models there, but if you really want to progress in modeling IMO you should use Max. Sure, Blender is probably the best open source / freeware modeler out there, but if you've afforded to buy Max you should use it to full power... IMO.

(Sorry if this seems like a rant...)
Best.

That's a load of bull.

I've seen great things with both modelers, it all boils down to which one you prefer to use.

All modelers are consistently the same, with the exception of sculptures but I'm not talking about those. If you know how to create a mesh in one program, then migrating to another will only require you to learn the layout.

A modeler doesn't make the model, the artist does. So use whatever program you want.

I've modeled swords with less polygons, so your sword is fine in that area. For practicality reasons, considering it's a one handed sword, I would shorten the blade, make it single edged and decrease the size of the hilt. Actually making that into a basket hilt with knuckle guard would make it more usable IMO.

(Sorry w.k.i for the hijack) JM: You're right, but using Max is probably make you get a job in the industry faster than Blender, most studios use it... Blender rocks. Not that it'd be bad to use.

Best.

no if your a skilled modeler the switch wouldn't be as hard. you would probably be rather easy since blender is a rather complex program to use.

I would say it like painting, anyone can buy a water color box and paper, but not many can put the water colors on the paper and make it look right.

Looks good for a first completed model, my crit would be to be a bit more adventurous with the texture, at the moment it is just a wood handle and metal, add in some more detail, maybe something shiny at the bottom But yeah, it is a LOT better than my first.
