Yeah it's your format. Try using a compressed wav format.

What are you using?

Audacity will let you export pretty tightpacked wavs.

Either that, or if you can get your hands on fruity loops, that will give you pretty excellent control over your wavs!

Even the iTunes export to WAVS is worth using. I get really small file sizes from that.

Ogg does work with FPSC, but I found in the past that ogg wouldnt loop properly, if using loops that is, something to do with the buffering, the file reloads at the start instead of being held in memory so you get a delay at start of sound. As a rule 16bit 44.1kh wav files are 10mb per minute. You can reduce this by reducing the sample rate, making it mono or compressing with ogg or mp3 format, though there are some issues with licensing mp3 for your games unfortunately, I dont know for sure how this affects a non commercial game. It defeats the purpose when you resample ogg or mp3 to wav, you lost a lot of the top and bottom frequencies when you compressed it first time around and all you do is fill the bandwidth with noise when you convert back to wav, though this should not be as noticable as you say.
