Yo!

This is the official Thread for my new Minigame Project "Shavra - The Escape from Reaper Harbour"

I want to say again that the overall working time on this time is very low. It only took me very few hours, so the game does not represent my best gamedesign skills. Anyway, most of the guys from the german community liked it. The story crawled inside my head while mapping, playing around with Wiz of Id`s Scifi Upgrade Pack. (awesome stuff!)

Developer

Wolf

(please view "Danksagung" (Credits) for ...well...for credits.)

Well, the story (at least I tried to translate )

Story

Preknowledge

Shavra is the third inhabited Planet in our solarsystem. It was a cradle for economy and wealth. I remember the flowerfest on the third day of the fourth harvestmonth. The love and the innocence wich shaped us kids these days.

Thats all forgotten. Our people have lost the interplanetar war. More than 2 billion people died in this terrible war... under them, my father. Our World didn`t have a change against the invaders from the twinplanet Malkavée. It took them only few years to transform our wohole planet in a halfdead desert. They decimated our people to 5 billion. As they finally left us, the great depression started to gormandize our people. There was no working governemnt system, no economie, no food and no flowing or even clean water. Violence started to spread in the streets. Out of this swamp of fear and anger formed the Zeitfraction. First it was only a fringe group...but then...

Militant groups attacked villages to convince them on their site... or to kill them. Their regimen which persist on extreme order and scheduling, eliminated billions of people. They became the reigning might and they found new energie sources. They started to promote energy from the planets core itself, reckless, because the planet started to weaken, the weather started to get unstable. All Scientists who where still alive where working for the Zeitfraction. Forced or not.

They started to become a superpower.

But in the shadows of these bastards formed our group. The FreedomFraction. I was there as 70 years ago, the first resistance started.

The Freedomfraction..our last hope..for..yes, for hope.

Hope,Love,weakness,...tenderness... Things the Zeitfraction sentences with death. They fight the weak so strong, that they didn`t even notice that they are the weak ones.

Freedom!

- Grey (his true name is Randak, but no one calls him that way) Schaman and one of the Leaders of the Freedomfraction. His high age is a mystery.

Story

You Play as Lopreska Radjanik. A young member of the freedom fraction. You where incorporated by the schaman grey in young age and you`ve been teached by him. In the age of 16, you joined the armed forces. Your master thinks your some kind of messiah, a so callen "Indigo", one of the few who own a so callen "firesoul" which gives you paranormal powers. Grey thinks your chosen to change great things in the future.
Your opinion: The old freak should keep this schaman fuss away from you. You where found as a baby, wrapped in a foil full of cigarette ash, on a carwrack in the middle of nowhere.Half dead and wak.You rised in a broken world... You aren`t really a optimist with a passion for live... The typical zynical antihero.

Your 5th mission played high in the north.Your just 18 years old. Your mission was to blow some energiepipelines ,togehter with a small sabotage troup, wich insist some defence emplacements and the villages near the mountains in the north. You`ve been surprised by a stormtroop of the Zeitfraction. For whatever reason, the soldiers captured you and haven`t killed you. You`ve been brought in the massannihilation prison "Reaper Harbour".

Gamegoal

You find yourself captured in an Isolation cell of a high security annihilation prison. Your goal is to get out alive. In this first episode (others will follow if people like the game) you will have to disable electronic security installations and sound cataclysm alert to open every single door in the complex. Afterwards you have to escape through the coolingwater devices.

This explains the game pretty bad. Just play it yourself

Features

- 5 Weapons in Ace Quality
- Lightmappingerrors
- Solid Scifi Mapdesign with some interestin parts.
- AI Fails
- A cover of the great "28 days later" theme by John Murphy
- Good use of lightmapping with alternate useage of colours.

The Game might also be useable as mapdesign tutorial.

Hints/Other

- The Download has 684 mb, the extracted file has 2 GB. I had to copy some stuff manually because the fpsc showed me an error that something is missing. So I copied till it was there -.-

- If the game lags, or if the KI Fails, disable bloom via starter.

- If you made it out of your cell... run as fast as you can to the ventshaft, the soldiers will open fire.

- Documents and Screens might be red with the enter button

- In Conversationmode, press enter to continue

- Don`t forget to save your game. If you get an error message while loading... **** happens.

- The first dialog window won`t be shown.

- I used FPSC Version 1.09 with EFX Mod 1.6
Starter Software has been coded by Doomster
(www.doomstator.eu.tc)

Trivia

-The Name "Shavra" bases on the Name of System of a Downs Baseist.

- Loads of the sounds ingame are from everyday stuff like a toaster or a waterboiler.

- The whole story of the game has been invented while mapping.

- My english is epic fail...I know.

Great job, Wolf. Always a fan of your work. Downloading now. But unfortunately, I won't have time to play it. I'm leaving on vacation here shortly. I'll edit this post when I get back with a review of it. Looking forward to it.

Thanks for downloading, guys

Anyway, I`m about to do some changes on the thread so it fits the forum rules.

Edit: Could a mod please check the thread and drop a line here to tell if it fits the new showcase rules?

I played it and loved it.The level design is excellent as usual for you, nice lighting, great small puzzles and overall one of the coolest games released these times. The only bad thing was(not your fault)big fps drop because of EFX mod on my crappy graphics card so I replaced the exe with s4mod 2.0 exe so I got some solid 20-25 fps Waiting for more stuff from you.

Well I can't get anywhere. If I'm supposed to jump up to get out of the first room, it just won't do it. If not, then I don't see any other way. Maybe it's just me.

Yes, you have to jump, and yes I have the same problem.

The EFX mod makes this way too slow. My FPS was so bad I couldnt make the jump, and the EFX movement made it impossible to stay on the toilet pipe thing.

I did similar to djmaster and swapped the EXE for the FPSC v.115 one. It works better for a while, but soon becomes too laggy. I didn't get too far before being killed by the soldiers, who seem to cause a bit too much damage considering the game is just starting.

Looks great though,
Paul

Thanks for the kind comments people...

especially @ dj master

I forgot to tell the following things:

- The Game was designed to run on High End Systems Only (I decided to develop Disasterpiece without EFX though) (High end system = Quad Core System)

- Some people in the german community already experienced slight problems by getting out of the Isolation Cell... I wanted to have an a bit difficult prison break though

Well, you have to continously jump till you reach the pipe, do not try to stand still on the hanging metal thing, do not jump from the toilet.

If you get out the cell, do not try to kill the two soldiers approaching behind the jailbars, escape throught the vent on your left.

Great game Wolf. I died at the part where you get out of the second vent, but I'm gonna try again soon. It did take a while to get the jump at the start right, but I've got it down to a science now. The enemies are a bit hard, but otherwise it's great. I had about 20-24 FPS, but then again, my rig is what you describe as High End.

@Coach Shogun: Yeah, thats some good FPS for Shavra.

@MetalDevil123: xD Well, you could trigger a gas explosion or something like this, but I think this would be some serious scripting work

Anyway, I do not feel like working on Disasterpiece right now, I do not have the mood for a serious project, maybe its too hot

Well, I just wonder what you guys really liked in the game, what you didn`t and what you missed. Would help me with my work on the second episode

Gotta say this is a lot of fun! Albeit it is very frustrating.
Ran smoothly for the most part, 20-30FPS with bloom on.
The very begining, the toilet has messed up physics or something because if you didn't jump on the very center, it would push you off, and make the beam that you have to jump to, wider so that you don't have to constantly run at the wall to keep on it.
The enemies are tough but fairly easy enough to kill with the wrench, love the environment and all the eye candy you put it. The soundscape, the tortured screams and the the rumblings really made the prison unnerving. Maybe the medical machines shouldnt have to be pressed everytime, then its more of a button mashing game

Very good though! Professional quality I'd say
Keep it up!

One more thing, when i play without bloom, the game crashes as soon as the level is done loading

All the best!

Downloaded this game and gave up as it was too hard for me to get the rocket launcher and after playing for a while it made me feel sick.

Great graphics and speed was 38fps all the time but the first stage just to hard I could not get on that small pipe.

@Coach Shogun: Hell yeah! Can`t wait for this one

@Ekipshi: Thanks for the review mate I haven`t thought that anyone would use the pipe for more than only the first enemy (except of Chuck Norris ...bleh). Yeah, I forgot to putt a "Super Turbo Turkeypuncher" Sound to the Medical Machine But nice to hear you like the game.

@Red Eye; have fun

@s4real and anybody else haveing trouble with the Pipes:

Well, I didn`t want to make breaking out of the Isolationcell too easy but it looks like I made it too hard.

You can get up if you hold the spacebare pressed and you navigate with the W/A/S/D keys.

I saw this in the youtube. If you will have door shooting more then this might help.

1 Do a door (just like you did)
2 Put an entity door behind it. But don't make it immobile.
3 That's all. There's no 3.
4 Oh forgot! Make the entity door strenght to 0.

That will make a pretty nice effect of a door flying. You can find it in youtube. Write: FPS Creator simple door trick

I really liked it. The first level was incredible. It felt like that those gasmask guys could be anywhere. I liked the first time they appeared. And you needed to get away from them in the thing under the floor. Everything was perfect. I will try getting the english patch to work. 10/10! I'm glad to hear that there will be more episodes. I hope this doesen't end up like HCZ.

well I'm glad you are continuing with it. But it's a shame at the same time. Your not continuing Sickening {Disasterpiece}.

Managed to get it to work.

After frequent saves, I got stuck at the top of the elevator, and had to load. Nicely enough, when I loaded my last save, I had all the guns, no ammo for any of them, but 9999999 rockets! After that, it became more of an explosive walk in the park

Very nice level though, plenty of detail. One of your wall lights uses a photo of a fluorescent light, and the brand name "Philips" is plainly visible. You might want to be careful with that, a lot of companies don't allow use of their brand names, especially in a video game where violence is carried out.

Massive Review Post!!!

The Good: Graphics (bloom, textures, etc.), voice-acting, story.
The Bad: Kinda hard, some collision problems
The Ugly: Save function didn't work for me.
The Great: atmosphere.

Keeping the Peace

I was scared out of my mind one I broke the door down. All that was on my mind was “Get to the vent shaft, get to the vent shaft.” Everything about the soldiers contributed to the game. Granted, it wouldn't be much of a game without them, but they did a lot more than be antagonists. I never knew where they would be, so I was always peeking 'round the corner trying to find them. I was trying my best to see them, before they saw me and cried out something in German.

A Beautiful Dystopian Future...

Just because the setting was ugly didn't mean the game had to be! The textures were crisp and realistic. The only way I can think to improve them is with normal and specular mapping, which AFAIK isn't possible in EFX. The bloom adds allot to the game, sometimes causing odd effects on entities. On one box, by the prisoner in level 2, I saw some glowing goo substance, that really freaked me out. The light fixtures also benefit from bloom, giving them a much more realistic effect.

Reversed Difficulties

The game felt as if it got easier as it progressed. Most games are the other way around, starting easy and getting harder. Perhaps the increase in guns and gun varieties contributed to that, but it really brought down the game. Of all the health I lost, I lost the most in Level 1.

Solid Air

Some entities were placed so that they gave me some trouble in navigating around them. There were few of these, but they were annoying. The boxes by the lift in Level 2 were the best example of this. I got stuck for about 5 minutes trying to get out of the space between the boxes and the wall. The other time this happened was in the start zone. Collision with the pipes and the bar were very counter-productive to me getting the RPG.

Fitting Atmosphere

I got what I expected out of the atmosphere: Scary, keep-you-on-your-toes prison break. I wasn't sure I would make it out of that joint...

I didn't.

I ended up dying on the level that you had to disable the generator. I left the big room, and got shot up to bits in the hallway. Since my save function didn't work, I can't try again without starting from Level 1.

Overall

A fast-paced action, horror shooter, that will keep you occupied for at least an hour trying to beat it. It's limited replayability value, and several noticeable bugs and downfalls failed to make this game bad. The menu, ingame images, and loading screens were awesome. It definitely was enjoyable and I highly recommend it. 8.5 out of 10.

ha! Yeah, I wanted to have an "interesting" Jailbreak, I think I made it

Yeah, Dynamic Objects cause me headaches, sometimes. Good to hear you like my textures I got them from filterforge but hunted them through loads of corrective procedures.

Well, yeah I focused more on the map than on the gameplay I guess. I`ll watch this in the second episode.

Yeah, thats more FPSC fault. But I won`t have any of these climbing thingies in the second episode. I just didn`t want to have an easy breakout from the isolationcell

You almost made it, the room this hallway leads to is the final room

Sorry mate but I had the same problem, couldn't out of the first room. There is also one other problem with it, although I don't know if anyone else has had this. Where the toilet and also where the bed is. If you jump at the walls a few times you end up jumping out of the level, and strange about is you don't die, but that is also end of game you may as well start again. Mind you I can't see the point if you can't get pass the first room.

I have Vista x64. Worked fine for me, other than the saving. I think I know the problem, there are two launchers for it, but you HAVE to use the one that's in the same folder as the Sharva.exe and the Files folder. At least that's how it was for me.

@teamhalo: Make sure your clicking on the one in the same folder as the Sharva.exe and the "Files" folder.

@Wolf: I think you should probably add that to the read-me file or by the download.

I played it!

Review:

Graphics:
Ace quality, really good, and except for the enemies from MP1, it looks almost commercial!

Sound:
Really nice too, lots of good trigger placement.

Playability:
Except from the "collision war" in the cell to get up, it's really nice, everything you would expect from an fps. And the first cell remembered me of Penumbra, don't know why!

Overall:

8.7/10, by far one of the best games I've played made with FPSC, and with some improvements it could be a commercial title.
BTW, you should use a mod that improved the framerates, I have a high system and had a 25-32 fps during all the game.

I had a framerate of 38. That's good. I don't understand how some people with high end computers are getting so low fps? Just wondering.

I played, but I couldn't get past the first room. How do do that?

Can you save the crew of LV21?

Look below

Quote: "Please Start via "Starter .exe" located in the same folder as the default exe"

That should do it for you.
