Hi, when you are making model do you break it down to the simple basic shapes need to make the object and then fill in the fine details with textures?

It depends on your intentions. If it's going to be for a game, then it's best to have the least amount of polygons and put most of the details into a texture. If you're just doing a prerendered animation, then you can use more detail in the mesh if that's easier for you(it's easier for me anyway ).

I see, did a keypad and made it with raised numbers and buttons, now it seem as if I could have done that bit with textures.

So like you said it where you might going to use it.

Also depends on how fancy and realistic you want the model to be in the game. 50 extra polys is not that much for a few buttons, but having each key on a keyboard would be pretty extensive when using it with 100s of other entities.

When looking at a box with a texture on it, the player might think: "look at that box with a texture on it."

If it is a keyboard, try extruding groups of keys (Like the Alphabet keys, F1-F12 keys, Num pad keys, etc.) instead of each button.
