Well, albeit, ATM these aren't models. But it does deal with 3D modeling, so i suppose this is the best place to put them.

I recently came across the game, Battlefield Heroes, which is kind of a cartoony style game. The graphics really interested me, and when i looked into thier texture files, it seemed as though most of them had been hand painted in Photoshop (or similar).

So this got me messing, here is my first attempt (obviously missing a lot, but just for trials...).

I'm hoping to get some full simple models done soon.

It was supposed to be damaged plaster over a brick wall... however, it didn't turn out so well...

I think it looks neat. Howsabout some tile ready texures? Some normal maps would really make the plaster stick out from the brick as well...

Team fortress has got some pretty cool cartoony style textures:

Never played Team Fortress, now i wish i had. Looks... fun

I'll see about a texture pack or something.

Sadly I don't know how to create bump maps, or apply them. I up for any explanations or help though.

Just downloaded the trial for 3DS Max, we'll see what i can make in the next 30 days

well, here's another. However i don't like it, I believe i blurred it to much, and it's messing with my eyes.

But none the less, you all may take a peek (i don't suggest looking at it any longer than that.)

I was watching Fletcher's video on how he textured his 'Optimus Pine' but i can't figure out which tools he used. Perhaps he can stop by and shed some light.

and without further a due (spelling? whatever)

Bump maps are pretty easy. Gray Scale Images where black is 'sunken in' and white is extruded. Normal maps, however, are still a bit confusing to me. Something to do with RGB where Red is an angle, Green is an angle, etc.

The second pic is good, but isn't quite as sharp as the first one.

I made a quick render with each on a random grassy plain:

Your texture work is actually looking really good. Your getting that cartoon style down real nicely.

I edited your last texture so it will tile nicely horizontally. I've also created a normal map for it.

Here's an in-game shot of the texture at work with normal mapping, light source and super sampling to smooth it out nicely:

I tried some bloom effect but it actually made it look a bit washed out. Though this could easily be fixed by saturating the texture a lot to compensate encase you did wanted bloom.

Keep it up!

Cool, Thanks.

Now, could someone quickly explain what the difference between bump and normal maps are? And *cough* possibly how i could apply them to a model in 3DS Max*cough*

Actually, i think i'll want to redo the second one, so it isn't as blurred, and has more defenition like in the first one. But, then tone the contrast on the normal/bump maps down so it doesn't have all that stucco look to it i guess. Luckily I can make normal maps, thanks to PS and the nVidia plug-in.

Shame on you and it is...very...

These look pretty good, much better than my idea of using Paint.net's Posterise tool on normal textures...

If I was ever given the opportunity to remove all the bad from the world, I wouldn't, because for there to be heroism, compassion and all that is good, there must also be all that is bad.

Alright, latest trial.

Base

Saturated

Bump

Normal

Still trying to figure out how to get materials to work properly in 3DS Max, or Truespace for that matter. Also, the Normal might be inside out.
