i can model stuff and i can do simple texturing and bump maps but i want to learn how to make more realistic textures. i look at josh mooneys and henery hams textures, they are amazing! i want to learn to make textures like that. yesterday i installed photoshop cs3 if that helps.

first, find a texture collector site, e.g. cgtextures.com., openfotage.net, http://mayang.com/textures/

Then download some, and try to make them more better and mor fitting for to your model. Maybe they need contrast/color tweak, blending, clone stamping and so on. Or as you are a beginner, is quite enough just cutting the textures to your uv, and do not tweaking anything.

thanks mate im glad you like my work but im not really that good .i to am jelous of joshs skills

ps is a great tool but it takes a lot to learn it so make sure you play about with it a lot ,try out the filters & different effects on a basic image to see what they do.search the net for tuts there are 1000s out there start simple then build your skills .

theres a basic metal tut on my site http://www.henrysfps.com/id13.htmlto get you started.

if you have some cash there are a few good books out there on the subject to try

The Dark Side of Game Texturing

3D Game Textures

i have both & they will help a lot.

cheers henry

They are photos. He just explained one method he uses to model is to create the texture first by compiling a set of images of the model, then use it as a reference in the modeler.

mike:
Don't let that put you down, a lot of industry games use this method. It's actually quit common.
