Well I was thinking of purchasing MS Visual Studio 2008 Pro because I want to look into C++ development, web development, and Mobile development so this program seemed just about perfect for me. Does anyone here own it? I would love to know how it works, should I buy it, it is a good development kit, and so forth before I buy it (because of the hefty $800).

Thanks!

When developing in Windows, yeah i suggest going with Visual Studio. It has a good compiler =)

Why not try the Express versions first? They're free, and will offer you most of what you need for a one-man team.

Pro is completely pointless. After using it on a machine at my school, I can safely say it has practically nothing of any use for C++ development vs. Standard/Express. Go for standard if you want resource editing and whatnot, but leave Pro alone.

All of which will work in the Standard edition, and don't require Pro. (Not sure about Web, but Mobile certainly isn't offered by Express)

I'm not sure but does express edition allow attaching debugger into process?
But yeah I'd go with Express too, especially if you are new to C/C++.

No it isn't. Standard is paid for also, but at least half the price of Pro.

Editions list: http://tinyurl.com/llhjad (MSDN)
(Apollo won't href the original link because it contains garbage)

Standard edition on Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Visual-Studio-2008-Standard/dp/B000WM1Z46/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1248706092&sr=8-3

If you're just planning on "looking into development" as you have suggested, I would not recommend spending a dime. Use Visual C++ Express and see if you enjoy coding in C++. If you want to go on to do Mobile dev (as David R says you can't with Express, but I haven't checked), then you will feel better about shelling out some cash.

What do you mean here... debugging? The Express version has the debugger.

EDIT:

Actually that Amazon link is a good price. I paid that much just for C# 2003 Standard before Express came out

Great thanks, just had to know because i compile my Win32 binaries with Visual Studio on Virtual Machine. And if there is some perks under Win32 side i can debug it.

I found that Netbeans is the best for C++ development.
Eclipse isn't too bad either.
But I had problems with Visual Studio + C++. it just seemed that the autocomplete and syntax checking stuff were broken half the time. Netbeans never gave me a problem, and seems to work better for C++ stuff than Eclipse.

VS Standard edition has web support built in (at least, 2005 does). It even lets you debug client side javascript using IE's script debugger. (And for firefox you can use FireBug, so you get a complete javascript debugger for both of the most popular web browsers!)

The main benefits of standard over express are that you can have 3rd part extensions, and you can have projects using different languages in one solution.
