Pioneering

Developed by: Chidem (FPSC Stock engine, v. 1.15 - no mods)

Description:

This is the showcase thread for my entry into the Fight for Independence Contest. The game I have created is set during the American Revolution, on the early frontier. Players control a settler who has recently arrived on the frontier who must attempt to prosper by achieving a number of life goals - these can be gained by purchasing property, marrying, or completing certain missions. There are three ways to win this game - gain seven life goals, horde a large enough amount of cash, or gain a high enough conscience level.

Cash is earned mainly by hunting wild hogs found in the wilderness but it is also rewarded after certain missions. Cash is used not only to buy properties, but also ammunition - ammunition can only rarely be picked up for free to manage your resources carefully. Cash can also be earned from the rental income of some properties. Once rent is collected (from within a property) it will eventually regenerate giving you a continuous supply of money.

Conscience is lost every time you kill a person - it can be gained by searching for the various "Public Notice" signs located throughout the map - each of these also contain historical facts or quotes from frontier settlers. A high conscience level is necessary to marry.

I've also included a short player guide in PDF format containing some more detailed information on the game's main mechanics. The game follows all the contest rules, including the use of a switch to open a door (in the 18th century - grrr - j/k). On my machine it runs around 20-30fps. I wanted to add alot more to it (such a sa choice in wives) but wanted to stick with a one level desgin (my intro level doesn't count!) and I think the map is about as weighed down with scripts as it can handle.

I tried running it three times, it still brought up the same error messsage, and refused to install an exe. Shame, this looked like a fun game.

Hmmm - just tested the installer and it worked fine on my PC. I have uploaded a new RAR archieve anyway which should save on all the hassle! I will try re-uploading the installer later on today in case the file became corrupted during the upload process

Not really sure what's happening here. The .exe is called Pioneering and has a new icon - but if the installer is corrupted then it's no surprise it's not here. Try the new RAR archieve - should work a treat

Me too but at least one other person has gotten the RAR to work so fingers crossed now

EDIT: I've updated the download to eliminate a bug that wouldn't let you complete the game - here is the new link: http://www.filefront.com/14144327/Pioneering.rar

I got the RAR working and you know what? I think this was the most enjoyable FPS Creator- Game experience for me. Even tought I am more into horror, but I enjoyed this more, than any horror game in here! Only things, that I was missing was: Ironsight, becouse there is no crosshair, so ironsight, would have been cool. And it was short! I got around playing with all the house business and all. You should also make some more wildhogs appear. Maby what you di to the rental thing. Make them trigger again in some time... If FPS Creator had that "ramdom trigging thing".

Wow, that was long. 9.9/10 It was the most enjoyable FPS Creator game. Altought it would have used an ironsight. Will you make this a longer game after the comp ends?

Hi Metal Devil - thanks very much for your kind words. Ironsights weren't included as I think they require Airmod and, If I am right, the variable system Conjured developed (which runs the cash/conscience) wouldn't have run - so I had a choice - sacrifice the variables and have a more traditional FPS game or sacrifice some of the FPS stuff to have a better RPG. And yes, I am aware that airmod/ply/etc have variables but I've not had a chance to figure out how to use those mods yet.

As for more pigs, etc, that seems to be a fault with FPSC - it seems to not like regenerating too many of them and eventually all respawning entities simply stop re-spawning. Got around this with the rent as I noticed that dynamically loaded/unloaded entities don't appear to be tied to the same counter as normal re-spawns. So when FPSC gets fed up respawning items it continues doing so if items are set up to dynamically load and unload. Bottom line is that I simply didn't have time to test whether running all pigs or Indians, for example, using this method would also "timeout" and I decided it was more important to have the rent/income system actually work (i.e. periodically generate new money) than it was to hunt.

Well done on buying everything - don't even think I've done that yet! Did you find the church...find all the medicine bags, etc?

It is a bit short but it's as long as I could make an open level game in just a 40x40 grid. I am thinking about developing this into a full game that I might release at a low cost. What I am thinking at the moment is that the level you played would be one of three campaigns - that way you would have three different frontiers to settle, each with its own charactersitics, etc. I'm not 100% sure yet but I think that is what I'll do.

Again, thanks so much for playing, am really glad you enjoyed it so much!

Ah, so you've not found everything yet...in fact there is a whole area you've not yet found. I'll give you a clue, did you open the jammed door? If so, did you carefully explore around that building once through?

See, not as short as you thought

Thanks that's very good of you to say. Out of curiousity, did you find the hidden area with the church in the game yet? Forgot to mention that when you asked for help.

I didn't know the church was hidden, I found it on one of the forks in the road. Though I couldn't find it a second time when I had the cash to buy it, that was because I forgot which fork(I eventually found it again)

By the way I have completed your scoring sheet and I'm about to email it to Kennedy. I think he doesn't want the entrees to see them until the contest is over (tommorow) so I don't think I will be able to email it to you just yet. But I will email you some notes I took down of small bugs and such I found as I played through the game. Expect it in your inbox within the next hour.

Yeah, but finding that fork could be tricky! Well done

Well, I fell through the boardwalk behind one of the settlers property while shooting an Indian. I'll have to start again. Actually, it happened while I was reloading. Reloading seems to be hit and miss, or am I doing something wrong?

I love the flow so far. The story is good and the quests are a great idea. You have to work to make money to buy guns/ammo, property and get married. Much better than finding everything on the ground. LOL I really like the conscience part, it adds nicely to the game play.

I'm not sure about the married part though. Do I have to? I'll get back to this again in a while. Great so far.

Brian.

That's a pain - I'll look into it and get is sorted soon. This is great, like having my own team of beta testers!

No, you don't have to get married - if you want to complete the game by using life goals you only need seven out of a possible...nine...I think. Anyways there are a bunch of properties to buy, each awarding a goal and there is a mission that awards one also.

I didn't open tha jammed door, but now I tried and some bug came and I just got there. Don't want to ruin it for everyone, so I wont tell it to everyone. But when I get to the area, and walk over the key on the ground, I lose all my money.

Short Review

Foreword

Well, my Gamereviews are usually highly regarded on the german boards due to my writing stlye, but you all know my english is`nt that great so this is a short review.

Story: 65%

I give a 65% on the story because there wasn`t really a story. it was more like an RPG with no "real" goal and no characters etc. Its mor the Accept and Accomplish Quest thingie. Anyway, all these historical Notes (a bit too much though) and the unique setting deserve an average story rating even though the game has no story.

Graphics: 25%

Well, it was really a pitty that the game looked that bad. No offense at all. The Game concept was really nice! A bit more fixing and gameplay additions and some work on your graphics would have made it ACE. These optics, the emptyness, the blockiness and the lag of "Love" really drowned the fun for me.

Leveldesign: 35%

Well, the Maps where HUGE. Even though they where really repeating and kinda boring. If you would have worked on the "magic" this game would be such a fav... sadly you haven`t

Sound 15%

The Audio was a real athmosphere Killer. The Loadingscreen Background seamed like the ambience you have on the trainyard. Anyway, the whole game hasn`t had any sound. Not even the torches made a sound. Why? Adding some noise wouldn`t be a problem at all.

Mechanics and Scripting: 85%

One of the most impressive Script Games I`ve ever seen. The Quests, the ability to gain money and a moral state, the possibilitie to buy Houses ot get married as the possibilitie to accept quests and accomplish then was dang awesome. I bet this took a load of time and caffeine. All respect to you on this one!

Interface 5%

Looks like made in MS Paint...

Fun 45%

The unique and awesome Concept has been drowned in the kinda broing gameplay and leveldesign. Pretty sad -.- The same thing happened to Gothic 3. I still give 45% due to loads of things I haven`t seen yet in FPSC and which where fun to explore.

Overall Rating 60%

I give this game 60 Percent not because it was loads of fun, but because it was well thought, unique and intelligent. Such games must be supported. I`m so tired of these Secret Lab Zombie Shooter with Doom Logics. Well, a 60 means a Bronze award from me xD

You might not give a dang, anyway, I can send a high res version of the award so you can pop it on your homepage like on this:

http://synasthasia.sy.ohost.de/Dark-Hazard/projekte.html

@all: Please give it a try, gentlemen, take a look at a game where you do not massacre tons of zombies with a shotgun.

Thanks for the feedback Wolf, all welcome - and the high res image would be great

@Metal Devil - I'm not sure what's going on there - it's possible that the cash may have updated late - that happens from time to time
