I remember in either AC3d or 3D canvas (forget which) there was a bridge modifier, where it could "bridge" the gap between two objects

does blender have anything similar?

sure, since my family is big on bowling ill make a bowling metaphor on it

you have 2 spheres, one small and one big (take a look at a picture of a bowling pin and imagine the spheres being the size of the pin head and body

these spheres dont touch, but if you used a bridge modifier on them it would create a new object that was the two spheres connected by what looks exactly like the pin neck
