Hey, I made some kid mad in halo 3 so he started spamming me with all these messages about how he was going to get his friend to 'fry my router'. Obviously I figured it was just the usual idiot throwing words. Next day, my router simply won't turn on.

My question is, is it possible someone really could have done something, and if so, is there no way to take legal action? The thing is ruined and I had to buy a new one.

I suppose that, assuming his friend is quite the skilled hacker, he could have screwed up the routers firmware. But, I don't know very much about networking, so who knows?

I would say it was merely coincidence... I would be freaking out too though, lol.

Seems to me like a little brat that doesn't deserve to breathe our precious air. I'd say it was a coincidence, but... the court doesn't know that...

Really, though, I don't think it's even possible. Maybe, if you're your own ISP, but I don't think so. It's not like you can connect directly to someone, you're going through hundreds of miles of wires and many different addresses.

There is no way that anyone on XBL could get the address of your router, if they could then MS would have dozens of law suits against them for that alone.

Have you tried rebooting your router?, like unplug it for a minute at least then plug it back in. Have you tried the router setup?, it might be an issue with your PC, it might be a broken network cable, it might be a broken RJ11 cable, it might be space mice chewing on your bandwidth. There's a hundred things it could be, but a XBL gimp is the least likely.

Okay thanks for the suggestions guys.

Van B, I did unplug and plug and at first some of the lights would turn on but after awhile of troubleshooting, nothing turns on now.

Some people on another forum mentioned something about bots and ddos (something denial of service) but that doesn't really account for why it no longer works at all...

Ive had a 'Elit3' clan on me back, they know i live in crosby and a general area where i live, through a xbox live clan match. The cheatin buggers thought they could lag my connection, so i ramped it up to 20mb from 3mb. Its at three since i dont like to host matchs lol, too much bandwidth.

Mayby not the router directly but the xbox sever ip link or something.

I thought that XBL was just a matchmaker? Once you're connected to someone, just look up the inbound connections page on your router and bingo.

But then he'd have to narrow it down to him, unless it was just him and the other guy on the server. MS would have the only database for looking up IP's in relation to screen names. I guess he could attack all of them, but again... assuming he had the time.

What exactly did you do to get him that mad at you? Geesh.

I think you'd be able to see which machine on the LAN the connections go to; the 360 would be pretty easy to spot.

So many routers ship by default with admin:admin as an administrator account and no requirement to change the password or username it's ridiculous.

I'm fairly certain there was recently a flaw disclosed allowing trivial root access to a lot of consumer grade routers. So it's possible he's just a script kiddy exploiting this flaw (and your router was affected / unpatched)

Probably, but I'm saying that it would be hard to narrow down which user belonged to which IP in a full 32 slot server without having access to Microsoft's database on that info.

As far as I know, the clients connect to XBL servers, not to each other. So no, there's no way he could get your ip address.

If you have not tried, use the reset button on the router (hold at least 30 seconds). This will reset the router to the state it was in when you got it new. If it is a software issue that should take care of it.

I had a similar problem with my router just a few days ago, none of the lights would come on. It turned out to be the AC adapter that broke, not the router. If you've got a voltmeter you could check that first, but good luck finding a replacement. I ended up getting a spare router from one of my dad's coworkers.
