Is Pro stable enough now (speaking in a DBC 1.13 kind of way) to do stuff, or is it too bug laden to put time into anything major?

It seems all it's best features (bsp etc) dont work well and theres loads of compatibility, compiler crashing and other problems.

I dont want to bother learning (or buying) Blitz so im in a little dilemma. Ive always trusted and loved DB programming and im not going to leave it now, but would the current state hinder progress?

Im going to buy it anyway though. Heh.

Well the stability is a lot better than it use to be. You can code just about anything now without that many problems.

In the next upgrade, we will get octree support and that will make collsion much easier to deal with and allow for some pretty nifty tricks.

We will also (hopefully) be getting, another multiplayer command that i sugested a few months before patch 5 but he said he was gonna get the 3d side of DBP better first.

It will allow the sharing of arrays, this means MMORPG's and multiplayer in general will be alot easier and faster. and the games will not have tobe in sync with each other and there is no data queue.

i just hope he has remembered

Whilst BSP support and LOD terrain support is still blatantly lacking the fact is the engine is much improved, the editor is at least passable and the bugs are for the most part removed.

It isn't perfect, DBPro is still not quite what the box says it was. However it is now useable as a dev platform and for the most blatant feature ommissions the cunning community has already found some excellent work arounds. Some of them probably better than DBPro was ever likely to get.

I hope BSP support gets a real push, otherwise theres no real good way of building decent levels.

Come on guys, we know you can do it!!!

Right now it seems to be pretty solid.

trust me, BSP isn't one of the best features...

MOst apps created with bsps pre-patch 4 might not have worked well, if you build one now with P4 things sill be OK for you. BSP's are weird: render weirdly, have weird quirks - if you're using CShop it's much easier to export a .col file and use some code to load the level and sliding collision - you also get lightsmaps that way.

Thanks David...err...89. Should I call you David or David 89?

Anyway, if BSP is not one of the best features then what is?

I am in wonder of how to make my levels, I'd love to get Cart. Shop but after buying Pro soon I wont have enough money to get it. I also find making BSP levels long and drawn out (but ive only tried hammer so far). I might just make a simple 3d level editor for my pro game, based on a 2d grid editor I knocked up a while ago in classic.

If I use levels made from .x pieces, will there be any disadvantages?

I think for world building BSP is just NR2!! I would be really happy if there was a highly efficient Quad- or Octtree handling for the whole world with the possibility to set all the needed parameters to get the max performance out of it

Not really - you actually get advantages. Check out my CShop landscape demo in the CShop forum - using a loaded cshop world I could place building around amatrix and have seamless matrix / buliding collision.

With .x pieces you can also have lightmapping and more than one building.

However, at the moment there is only a .col exporter (.col is the file with all the collision info in) for CS2 - there is supposed to be one coming in 3, though I'm not sure if it is

And David will be fine

BSP support will be continued to be pushed. There will be many ways to create worlds, but all of this takes time.

In patch 6 you will notice a nodetree system with very advanced portals and fast collision. The portal system is even multi-tiered.

BSP support is not dead either, its just another way to build worlds. This will also be improved but I can't say anything about this yet.

Patch 6 is what I call a world builder upgrade and there is more going on than what I have listed here.

Thats funny i was just going to say if theres gonna be a portal like underware's vis worlds to render complex levels faster - i cant wait for that.

Any idea on when update 6 is scheduled for?

I think the world builder part of pro is what needs bringing up to speed - after all whats the game with no levels or beautiful complex FAST RENDERING scenery?

theres a new command in patch 5 that reduces the amount of touching face polys in a maze of cubes as an example.

something perfectly suited for a home grown map makers final export feature.

Well the NDA is technically still going on. However, thats not why I said that. I said that because there are plans in progress, but they are still being fleshed out. Don't want to give details until code is in progress.

I have no idea yet. I do know that most of the main work has been finished, but lee will want to fix bugs with DBPro and add some other features not related to this, so I really have no idea.

I would guess it won't be too long
