Wow disagree with the scores completely. Shadowfire had good structure and kept you intrigued.

Kravenwolfs story doesn't even have a middle to it, but he sure did make good use of a thesaurus. Not to slam you but it's not exactly fair to call this a complete short story as it's not at all.

This is coming from someone who has won a laptop from a writing contest, with well over 1000 entries.

Well, the point of it was to capture as much detail of the shot and put it into words. He did the best of painting a perfect picture of what the screen was. His descriptive work is what I was truly looking for. I would prefer someone to show me where and what this shot was, rather than giving me a beginning, middle to end story. I also write a lot, and continuously write poetry. So I am well aware of what I think is the best work. Kravenwolf caught the true meaning of this contest, to create a world more real than one screen could show. Proving that a picture is not worth a thousand words, if you can use your words wisely.

I never used a thesaurus. Now, I don't know how much of a writing history you have, but if you want to get technical, none of the entries in this competition would be classified as a short story by publishing standards. Based on word counts, a short story usually falls between 1,500-7,000 words in the eyes of real-world publishers. Obviously, this varies, and there is more to look at than just the number of words, as I'm sure you would agree. The entries here would fit better in the catagory of "flash fiction" (a short writing of around 1,000 words or less). But I don't think darimc was trying to be that accurate with this contest

Whatever the length, all stories should include the key elements of a story (introduction, conflict, etc) which, if you look carefully in my entry, you should find them all. But I can assure you, the story does have a middle and a climax. At the time I wrote it, I was using the first 300 word limit that was originally posted for the contest; so maybe that's where you were having a little confusion. It's harder to pinpoint all of those elements when a story is very short. Even still, check it over again; those elements should all be there. Just Google 'elements of a story' to see what I'm talking about if you're not familiar with them.

I've been writing for over ten years, and my dad is a published author that has taught me a lot over those years. And though I'll agree that it wasn't a story worth submitting to a publisher, it does follow those elements

EDIT: Would you mind posting a link to your entry in the contest you won a computer? I wouldn't mind reading it.

Ok, that's what you told us is the first post, perhaps next time you should actually tell us what you want, instead of changing your mind and deciding that the most descriptive story is the best one.

Kravenwolf's story was creative, and it was also the best written. Descriptive usually means it was well written. I am sorry if anyone is pissed because they didn't win, but he has what I was looking for.

I'm not upset. Though, I wouldn't mind having a story score, not that something I banged out in a few minutes while doing other things ought to do particualarly well.

thankyou! my dad has been an english teacher for about 10 years so that kinda rubbed off on me.

however, i solidly believe that kravenwolf's victory was deserved, becuase his story kept the reader in and delivered a sad, unexpected ending.

I rated them the way I wanted to. I took the ones I particularly liked, and gave them scores. If I created a score sheet for everyone, it would take weeks. So I narrowed it down. End of story.

I know I came off harsh and I am sorry for that, but I don't think my criticism is wrong or unfounded.

My whole thing was it wasn't a story. It was a description with an ending, and the setting was way over described. It's like something an English major writes when he comes right out of high school. Trying too hard, with little substance if that makes any sense. Short stories are hard to make complete and that's generally the issue people have with them.

As far as the contest goes, it was stupid of me to mention that in some attempt to show my point was valid. I won that laptop when I was in high school(26 now). Was a Pentium 2 and loved it. It was a competition for all the schools in Franklin county Ohio. I no longer have the story(my mom might) and the laptop is long gone.
