Maybe an object needs to be textured before it will sphere map?

There's no place like 127.0.0.1

i have the same problem. it only occurs if i use the "set display mode" command my object just appears white. take the command out and it works. i tried it with every res and colour depth. might be a bug, im not sure

The sphere mapping does produce a very dark object... I think it depends on the bitmap.

Try the showcase example.

There's nothing wrong with your code (although the specular command is redundant). I would suggest the problem is with the sphere map itself but without seeing it I can't confirm. They need to be carefully constructed or you just don't see anything happen, much like a normals map for bump mapping.

Here is one I use a lot, works very well for a metallic shine:

Also - your object needs to be smooth, right? You can't just apply sphere mapping to a cube for example - the flat sides just won't do anything. Ideally use a sphere or object with lots of smooth edges, it's a waste of a command otherwise.

Cheers,

Rich
