Has anyone messed around with desktop interaction?

I was thinking of writing something similar to the MS Office PaperClip that pops up and helps the user, like the MS Agents.

Is there a way to run 3D apps with a transparent background to the desktop with no window border...<<OR>>

Would I have to snapshot the users desktop and work my app that way? With a kinda FAKE desktop background? Which I really dont want to do.

Writing a 3D Envelope that flys across the desktop spinning when the user has mail. Seems like a waste of resources to snap a desktop pic, switch to 3d mode, animate the envelope and switch back to REAL desktop..

I do not believe DBPro can run in such a way, it is perhaps not as versatile as the 'visual' dev platforms because it is very clearly geared for making games.

Even snapshotting the desktop is not easy and would probably involve some poke'ing about because you cannot paste and image from clipboard in DBPro, only text, so even my using a .dll call to snap the screen it's hard to do anything with the data.

I think this is a case of getting the right tool for the job, and in this case, sadly, I don't think DBPro is the tool to do what you want.

That said, there may be another way that I havn't thought off... Over to the clever guys...
