I remember an episode of a show called Sliders where you had to show "Fast Food Insurance" and doctors permission to order anything at a fast food restaurant.

Soon the counter help will have to read you your rights before handing you any food.

Quote: "You have the right to consume this meal or beverage only if you do in a proper manner. Any thing you do while consuming this meal or drinking this beverage may be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney present during your meal. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you. Do you understand the risks of accepting and consuming this food or beverage as I have explained them to you? Do you want to waive your right to an attorney? Enjoy your meal!"

Brian.

EDIT: Maybe you should have to pass a test before you can order anything hot or cold. Otherwise, you can only get soft food in squeeze tubes at room temperature.

I'll add: I often visit the cafe in our local library (also a coffee shop before lectures) and their drinks are quite tasty, but not what I'd imagine would give an old lady 3rd degree burns. It's hot, it's probably burn a bit and would hurt quite a bit, but would give an old lady the treatment she needed. These places need to be very quick and they're very efficient at what they do.

As for 'optimal temperature for coffee', I'm sorry, but this is McDonalds coffee and hot-drinks from McDonalds do not taste like 'proper' hot drinks, so a coffee in McDonalds doesn't taste like a proper coffee and a tea doesn't taste like a proper tea. Likewise for Starbucks and Costa, though it's the kind of 'coffee' or 'tea' most people are used to, but it's just mass produced grain and the coffee is just made 'on the go', I sincerely doubt McDonalds are 'coffee' snobs and try to offer 'the best tasting coffee' to serve to their customers. I doubt their customers would notice the difference. 'Quality' isn't what people go to McDonalds for, I bet if the sold alcoholic beverages, then I bet their Guinness would be poured straight into the glass as though it were a pint of lager.

Why do you think that's safe?

One over-enthusiastic squeeze and you choke to death.

My sympathies are with the old lady on this occasion (I generally think people should be responsible for their own actions - but, equally, food or drink should be "fit for purpose").

A few years ago my wife and I went for a meal in a local inn. When food is served to you on a plate you expect to be able to eat it - on that occasion my mouth was severely scalded and blistered by the first mouthful. I didn't sue - but never went back. I think it was irresponsible of the company concerned not to warn me that the food would be dangerously hot for some time.

I really don't understand why some of you think that it was the old lady's fault. Coffee is supposed to be drunk. From the sound of things she would have been scalded if she had tried to drink it. The issue of putting it between her legs, etc, is frankly irrelevant - I'm sure I would have been blistered if I had put my meal between my legs, but that is irrelevant (and somewhat unlikely unless I've had too much refreshment beforehand).

Yes, that is probably the issue put 'sweetly'.

I assume he's referring to injury of trespassers on your property (which if I recall correctly, can be "appropriately harmed" without sanction in some/many states)

Why do they never sell it like that in a travel ads?

It was only up until 2 years ago when you could shoot a Scot with a bow and arrow in York...tourism went down after they amended that old law. You would have thought after a while the Scots would stop turning up in York.

Oh yeah, health and safety laws with regards to coffee temperature sound exactly like the kind of meddling we need from our governments during the economical crisis.

Madame shouldn't have spilled her coffee, and shouldn't have been awarded money for spilling it and teaching the world you can be backwards and earn money as long as you're being backwards in a large company building.

On top, McDonalds should've been fined for making dangerously hot coffee.

You wouldn't need specific laws about coffee temperature :/

H&S is intended to make the employer assess possible dangers and minimize them. Handing customers (let alone staff) extremely hot coffee, on the other hand, is the best way to maximize the danger

My uncle was badly burned by McDonalds coffee a few years before that lawsuit. If he only knew what to do.... although he's not a little old lady with not long to live, which probably ended up benefiting her case.

I still can't see how the coffee could get hot enough to require skin grafting. My sister spilled a pot of boiling water over here years ago (boiling! I doubt the coffee was still boiling with bubbles in her cup). Nothing more severe than a 2nd degree burn.

I've had 3rd degree burns, and there is a huge difference. Nothing looking at your skin turn black and melt your fingers together. Stupid bunsen burner.

She was older, I believe, and therefore had weaker skin. It loses its elasticity with age and thereby I'd imagine other properties diminish too. I think she was probably wearing a seatbelt too which prevented a fast escape so the coffee had a longer time to have an effect.

Also, reaction times are slower when you're older. Even if she could of moved the coffee away from her somehow (like lifting her clothes or whatnot away from her skin after it was spilt) she probably reacted too slowly for it be useful in negating burns

Go make an edit to a page. See how long it lasts.

You can always check the sources at the bottom of the pages. People who say to not use Wikipedia are over exaggerating the beliefs of others who don't know what they're talking about.

Unless it says it's not specifically cited, then don't worry about it. The sources are listed!!! (At the bottom of the page.)

Wikipedia isn't 100% reliable and that's why if you're a researcher you're not allowed to use it and at University you're not allowed to use it either, some inaccuracies are easily made, however, you're right about the sources and sometimes wikipedia is a great starting point to any bit of research. Sometimes I use wikipedia when I debating on the internet, for example I used wikipedia to back my claim that 'consummation of marriage only implies sex when the term is used colloquially', but somebody contradicted me with stronger sources. So perhaps checking other sources (linked in the references sections of an article) is necesary. But to say it's entirely untrustworthy is just silly.
