...do high-quality MP3 players (like an iPod) have replaceable batteries?

I know the really cheap ones (much like my dying 1 GB SanDisk Sansa Clip) do not have replaceable batteries. So I'm wondering if the more expensive, fancier models do have replaceable batteries. This is the new MP3 player I want to get. Sort of resembles the iPod Nano.

Thanks to all who respond!

I don't think they have, like AAA batteries or anything. If you're asking if they have replaceable battery packs or built in batteries, it will most likely vary from player to player.

I have a devious mind.

The iPod doesn't but I still love my iPod Touch, you should get one of those.

Okay, thanks for the replies guys! Too bad iPods don't have replaceable batteries...it's also kind of odd. I guess it's their ploy to make people buy more of their products.

@Zeus: I'd get an iPod (likely a Nano), but I'm trying to keep a certain budget and thus Sansa is they way to go for me. Thanks for the reply and advice though!

You can probably GET the battery replaced if it dies. You'd just have to take it into a shop or go bother Steve Jobs or something...
I just don't think they sell batteries you can replace yourself.

That makes sense. SanDisk probably offers a similar thing...I'll check into it before I purchase this player. If they don't offer that service, then I'll get an iPod (eventually).

Putting disposable batteries in the iPods would defeat the purpose, as it would make them 5 times as thick. They're nice and slim now.

Well yeah, I didn't mean replaceable batteries like double A's. I just wondered if they offered replacement batteries if you shipped the device in or something.

I would recommend saving up your money and buying an iPod Touch. It's really worth it. They're great devices. If I hadn't just gotten a iPhone 3GS for graduation and given my iPod Touch to my friend, I would have sold it to you for a pretty good deal...

I've heard too many terrible things about the 3GS.

Apple has now put non-removable batteries in their laptops. The result is a thinner laptop with longer battery life due to how they were able to shape the embedded battery. And the 17", because it's bigger, has longer battery life than the 15" and smaller laptops. It's both good and bad. The bad part being you likely have to pay Apple an outrageous fee to replace a bad battery.

Oh, and replacing a battery in the ipod isn't too difficult. Search ebay and you'll find cheap kits.

I have a Sansa Fuze. Very nice, slick, fast. The mechanical wheel is way better than a touchwheel because it clicks like a mousewheel. The video convertor, however, is annoyingly slow and large and the screen scratches easily.

It doesn't look easy to disassemble and change the battery; no screws.

The MicroSD reader is the best I've used and instead of shoving the files in their own folder it mixes them with all the lists on the player.

It does need to build artist/album/song lists every time the files are edited or a card is put in to make the menus rapid. This takes at max 35 seconds.

I'm glad to say it sounds good and it has a fully adjustable equaliser rather than the five setting junk that most players come with. This is especially useful because some bands have annoyingly loud snare drums which seem to get exponentially louder.

They're easy to disassemble and replace, the problem comes when you put it back together

Welcome to iPods circa 2001 (besides, modern touch based clickwheel iPods make a click sound any way )

A click sound is a completely different thing to an actual, mechanical click of a brush locking against the pads inside the rotary switch. I've used an iPod touchwheel on many occasions and I still can't get used to the lack of proper feedback. I hate touch sensitive systems... :/

That's so true! Same with all modern electronics, DSes, whatever!

@NeX:

I agree with your thing about touchwheels/devices. I recently was checking out my friend's iPod Nano, and found that the touchwheel made things a little too easy; i.e., I kept accidentally changing the volume just by lightly brushing the wheel. It is a cool idea, but it was just too sensitive for me (or maybe I'm just too stupid to not have my fingers on the wheel during song playback? ). I like that the Fuze has a scrollwheel, not a touchwheel, but I'll still be careful when it comes to changing the volume.

I also *really* like the notion of having the MicroSD expansion slot. With my family's external media card reader/writer, I'm really looking forward to that feature a lot!

One thing that I don't particularly like though is that the player only supports one format of video (MPEG 4). The Sansa View, however, also supports .WMA's as well as .MPEG4's, but the Fuze doesn't. However, I'm not planning on using this for videos that much (although it's a really nice bonus!), I just wish it wasn't restricted to one format.

Everything else about it is really enticing to me. For example, I love having a radio built-in to the device, because that's just cool beans. And the voice/radio recorder on my Sansa Clip has proven useful to me multiple times, so I know I'll be using those features a lot on the Fuze once I purchase it.

Now all I need to do is cash a couple of my paychecks from my summer job and buy this puppy, and maybe a MicroSD card (though I could ask for that for my birthday).

Thanks for the feedback NeX! How long ago did you get your Fuze, and where did you purchase it from?

I got my 4Gb Fuze for £45 from Play.com on a special offer with a 2Gb card. Note it's MicroSD not MicroSDHC so it won't go above 2Gb.

And it's not MPEG-4 support, it's some silly specific variant of it that only seems to work if it went through their convertor.

The included headphones are actually pretty good. They have a very deep, soft sound although as the volume goes up the snares seem to get really loud and need tweaking using the EQ.

Propietary connector... ugh. It's not as if it supports a wide range of accessories like the iPod.

The back of the case is nice, it's some satin plastic finish that feels soft. At least it isn't freezing on a cold morning like a metal back. Seriously, stop putting metal on portable devices. It dents and scratches so easily, is cold especially in winter and if it does dent, you can't just glue it like you can a crack in plastic...

Buy a hard case. Honestly. The screen cover is a plastic that isn't hard enough to resist the scratches and isn't soft enough to bend. The MP3 player I had before this (TeckNet v80) had a really soft display that never scratched in the year before its onboard flash failed.

Battery powered MP3 players are generally cheaper.

If I were you I'd just get something that plays music. There's no need for anything fancy when you just want to hear some darn music. Hell I can still amuse myself with a cassette player.

Your casette player holds hundreds of full-length songs, allows you to browse them easily, has no moving parts, has a fully customisable EQ and is smaller than a pack of cards? Wow, where do I get one(!)

Yeah, I'm not so thrilled with that either, mainly because if I lose the cable or it breaks I'll have to go hunting for a replacement. So I'll just be really careful with it.

As NeX said...

I shall also add that it's not just the nice looks or size of the device, but the features as well. I know I won't use it to play videos too often, but I'll probably put a few good music videos on a card for future entertainment. I have to say that the other things I really like are the FM Radio and voice recorder, because that is some really cool extra features.

I'm planning on buying this next week, seeing as this week is pretty much already over thanks to time being consumed by other matters. Thanks to everyone who replied in this thread and provided their feedback on the Fuze!

There's a bug with the voice recorder, actually, forgot to mention. When the screen blacks out there's a 1/8sec pause in the recording. :/

Eh, that's not so bad. My Sansa Clip kind of has that problem sometimes, just split-second gaps in the recording that are barely noticeable but are definitely still there. Mildly annoying I admit, but it still doesn't stop me from wanting this bad boy. Hehehe.
