I found out today that I can use my iPhone's internet connection from my computer without having to pay the rip off prices that 02 are trying to charge.

I'm wondering: what do you think would happen if they found out I was doing this, which clearly violates their terms and conditions.

I've read that I may be charged, but how much will I be charged? Also, what are the chances of being caught? I don't intend to over use the connection, I'll just be using it to look at forums and other low bandwidth pages.

Can't the iPhone use wireless networks? If so, just get a router, and that's that!

I'm pretty sure the iPhone supports WiFi, so that is an ideal solution. If not, get a better phone.

It does support wifi, but theres a good chance that there will be no wifi around. The flat I'm going to doesn't have internet.

Btw I'm only there for 2 weeks so this isn't a long term solution

I don't think I read your post properly.

You want to access the internet on a computer using your iPhone?

My old Samsung D600 can work as a 56k modem when plugged in over USB. Is this a similar idea?

Yes, iPhone 3G internet means I can use internet from most places in the UK without wifi. I can do this using the iPhone browser but clearly a keyboard and mouse are much easier to use. So just to be clear, my laptop uses the 3G internet of my iPhone.

02 charge 19.6p per MB of usage and you have to pay either £15 or £30 a month.

It is possible to modify the iPhone (this is easy to do) in order to gain this service for free.

So what are the likely consequences of doing it for free, should I be caught. Will they just charge for each MB at their standard rate or can they legally charge me extra?

It's called JailBreak.
Also known as "RedSn0w", or "QuickPWN", or "PWNageTool".

I "PWND" my iPod Touch, and I'm loving it. Most of what Apple rejects to the AppStore, goes to Cydia (3rd-party installer app).

I didnt jail break my phone, you simply goto a website and download a configuration file. This takes a couple mins and then its sorted. I tested it out and it worked nicely

Why did'nt you jailbreak? You don't know what you're missing

Skype over 3G is an example.
And unlocking the phone is another.
And for the 3G (not 3GS): a video recorder. All free

Oddly enough here in Australia we've actually got tethering and MMS before the US! But we're missing out on visual voicemail...

Supposedly, the 3.0 software added the ability for internet tethering. Now we just have to wait for AT&T to actually allow it.

Not supposedly, I've tried it. AT&T sound like crap or the Equivalent of Australia's Telstra! They are seriously bad...

Don't assume anything. I did once and then I was trolled by a Mod.

A clever thought Mike, but sounds to be too much of a hassle right now until ATT allows for it. Let me know if you get that working

Oh don't even get me started with AT&T right now. They turned off my phone service and when I went to pay the past due amount they wanted over $600 (3 times what I owed). They shut off my service but continue to charge my monthly plan and expect me to pay for the service I couldn't use.

Did anyone hear about AT&T blocking the "4chan" site for their internet users?

Care to elaborate? Or can you stop whining about it already?

Ya it apparently was to block some DDoS coming from the site, which didn't make a whole lot of sense to me... but whatever they say. I don't plan on switching to them anytime soon, regardless of what over hyped, but still cool devices they have.
