What's the point if there's going to be Windows 7 in a few months?

If I recall correctly, Windows XP SP3 was released after the release of Vista...

SP2 is just all the updates so far collected into one (as in, all the ones you would get automatically) if I recall correctly, which is why it didn't get as bigger fanfare as SP1 (which included changes which weren't already in other updates)

It was released four months ago.

Besides, Vista needs some patching up.

I'll be one of those peps waiting to upgrade until I hear the words, "It's stable.."

Took me over a year to switch to vista...still regret that. Oh well, it's what came with my new computer.

I got blue screen of death while vista was updating, and then after a few minutes of using the computer normally or in safe mode I would get blue screen of death.

I used system restore and everything returned to normal, my respect for Microsoft has decreased

Apparently, Windows 7 is far better than vista. From various beta reviews I've seen.

I can say that it is. It just overall feels better. The only thing I really hate on Win7 is they took out the 'classic' start menu, you're stuck with that huge bulky vista menu, ugh!

I said similar things, but then I thought about the new design in Vista. The Start Menu is a menu. It's hidden except when you explicitly ask for it. Therefore it should offer as many features as possible because it's a good place to hide them. The thicker window borders are likely a response to some saying they were hard to grab in XP. The new Explorer I cannot fathom. It has none of the flexibility of the XP Explorer and is such a cluttered mess...

I really hate file browsing in Vista, its so hard moving from XP. What was wrong with XP file browsing anyway!? It pisses me off when they change things unnecassarily - if its not broken, don't try to fix it.

Also: Why are they removing things... e.g. there was an in-built audio mixer on XP but there is no audio mixer in Vista

And finally, sound recorder in Vista is significantly worse than that of XP - what the bubble!? e.g. it doesn't remember where you saved your last sound so you always have to browse to a different location.

I'm not that optimistic with windows 7. I seem to remember loads of hype about Vista which turned out to be miss-placed. I don't understand why they haven't fixed basic problems with XP and Vista yet e.g. notepad undo only remembers the last action, not any previous ones.

There was a mixer on Vista and it was improved; you could adjust the volume for each app.

Handy for those annoying noisy apps.

The file browsing is an attempt to copy Finder's browser. Somehow they got it even more wrong. Having that banner on the side and the incomprehensible spacing on the OS X browser's annoying, but having a huge panel down the bottom, loads of bars, a side banner AND an empty titlebar? Meh, shoot them, I say.

even though they are greedy modsters, i'm afraid i'm a Microsoft follower as much as it pains me to say it.

If it helps at all, Windows 7 RC feels more stable than Vista SP2 did.

The reason they changed it is more apparent in 7. It's much more polished. I'll admit I hated it at first in Vista, but it grew on me.

Compared to how much more efficient Windows 7 is with memory-management, power-management, multi-tasking, etc., notepad's undo isn't a big deal. Besides: at least Paint and Wordpad have been given ribbon interfaces.

I think their rationale was "screens are growing in size, so let's use it!" Then they had too much fun. . .

Uh... not everyone is going to pay another 200$ for a new copy of windows. Vista works fine for me, always has and i'm probably not going to upgrade for a few years.

I've not encountered anything wrong with the RC, BETA reviews seem to support the idea that it's stable, though it's probably a good idea to wait before people start making big complaints, but so far I've only really read compliments.

Indeed, I've been using Windows 7 since the first RC and it's gotten FAR better since then. It runs as stable(if not more) as XP, it takes a lot less memory then Vista did(yes, it still uses more then XP, quit whining and upgrade your prehistoric PCs! What would you expect with shiny windows rendered all over the place?) Overall it's fairly good, I've also found that I can play games on a higher quality then I could on both XP and Vista for some reason... I mean if I put Crysis on the highest I would've got 20FPS before, now that's around 47.

It's not the world that turns against you, it's you that turns against the world.
