Greetings fellow FPSCreator users!
This is my first time sponsoring a contest, so bare with me.
I want to make it simple, so I will try to limit this contest in prizes, and file sizes, but not in creativity or imagination.
So, here goes…
Rules
(1) This is a MAP contest, which is limited to users of the Free Version of FPSCreator. (Those who do not already have the build option)
Anyone who already has purchased a license of the full version of FPSC, or the Build Upgrade, is not eligible and their entry will be disqualified.
(2) All entries will consist of either a ZIP or RAR file that includes one FPM file and up to 10 FPI files.
If you choose to not include any custom scripts, then you may simply upload your FPM file without it being compressed in a ZIP or RAR file.
NOTE:
The FPM file is the map file created when you save a map and it is located in the mapbank folder. This file is mandatory, because I cannot load your map without it.
The FPI files are AI Script files that are created by you and are optional.
You do not need to write custom scripts to enter, but you are allowed to include up to 10 custom scripts if you choose to include them.
(3) All custom scripts must be created and stored in a new ‘cec1’ folder created for this contest.
If custom scripts are included then they must reside in that folder, which should be placed in the scriptbank folder. IE… scriptbank/cec1
Custom scripts are optional and not required to enter the contest.
(4) Map size is limited to the entire 40x40 segment grid including all 20 stories high.
In other words, you can use the entire map grid if you want, but you are limited to one map, meaning only one FPM file.
(5) No custom media other than FPI scripts are allowed. That means you need to use only the stock media. No custom sounds, HUDs, or models. STOCK ONLY!
This is in an effort to keep file sizes down so I can do the judging timely, and to keep development simple for new users.
This is a level design contest not a modeling contest, so those technical modeling skills are not required for this contest.
(6) All entries must be uploaded to this thread on or before 11:59 pm EST September 30th, 2009.
Any entry posted after 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time on September 30th, 2009 will be disqualified.
(7) One entry per person.
Prizes
There will be TWO (2) winners and TWO (2) prizes. (One prize for each category - see amendment)
Each Winner will receive a copy of FPSCreator Bonanza.
The Bonanza includes the full version of FPSC + Video Tutorials + 8 Model Packs.
Modification
I do not plan on changing any rules except to reword it for clarification, but I may have to shorten the deadline if there gets to be an overwhelming response and I start getting more entries than I can handle. This contest officially starts September 1st, so I will try to have any rule editing done by then. (in case I forgot something)
Good Luck!
AMENDMENT
There will be two categories of entries for this contest. FRIENDS & INDIVIDUAL
Let's have everyone say whether they had help or not.
Just say "Friends" or "Individual" when you submit your entry. (that same post)
I think you know which one applies to your case, so we can use honor system for that.
Yes, asking questions in the forums can be help, but that is not what I mean by friends. (you still individual developer running with your own plans)
By friends, I mean sitting down together at the computer with your friend, or instant messaging them with step by step instructions or ideas.
This is fair for everyone, and gives us more than one prize.
GOOD LUCK!
UPDATE September 16, 2009
Well, we are about half way to the dealine for entries, so I thought I would go ahead and edit this to reflect the number of entries.
ENTRIES
FRIENDS
September 28 - "ThePSXGamer" by ThePSXGamer & Friend(s)
INDIVIDUAL
September 19 - "The Game" by Field meister_Gilmer
September 30 - "The Conker Bosses" by Lemmywinks
September 30 - "The Mansion" by Deltayo
The deadline for submitting entries has passed.
Thanks to all of you who entered.
Congratulations to ThePSXGamer for winning the "FRIENDS" Category prize by default, since they had the only entry for that category.
CONTEST WINNERS
Well, since this was a simple contest that limited the contestants to only the stock media that comes with the free version; there is no sense in getting very complex with the judging. Therefore, I will keep that simple too and just describe a few likes and dislikes and then maybe a suggestion or two.
ThePSXGamer
Likes
Very Nice Map Layout
Good Weapon and Ammo Placement
Good Enemy Placement
Switches were a nice challenge
Dislikes
The switches may have been a little too complex for some people. (Too many)
Suggestions
Be careful not to make challenges too difficult, or you may lose the players’ interest in the game.
Field_Meister_Gilmer’s “The Game”
Likes
Straight forward design
Nice use of lights
Dislikes
Culling issues with entities showing through floor segments
There were a lot of weapons and ammo
Suggestions
Giving ample weapons is a must, but having too many weapons and ammo available do not stress the importance of ammo management, which can be the difference in life or death.
Lemmywinks’ “The Conker Bosses”
Likes
Nice weapon placement
Aggressive Enemies
Great diversity of stock media (Even included the stock video!)
Nice map layout
Dislikes
I saw gaps through some of the segments, so the placement could have been better. (Unless they were intentional peepholes to the outside)
Suggestions
This map was great and I have only one suggestion; keep doing your thing!
Deltayo’s “The Mansion”
Likes
Expansive Map
The fact that you entered even though it was not finished (determination)
Dislikes
Excessive use of light ranges
Suggestions
I know this was a one map contest so you were aiming for a grand design, but keep each level small enough that the load times do not get out of hand or you might lose the player before they ever start.
Limit light ranges to default or smaller if you want to avoid some of the loading issues.
Test often. (I only say that because I did experience a crash with this one, but we know it was not complete so it’s okay)
As I said before you guys are all winners for having the guts to put your map out there for all to see and comment on.
I also said that “each winner will receive a copy of FPS Creator Bonanza”.
So, there you have it;
YOU ALL WON!!!
I doubled the prize for this contest from one copy to two when we added a Friends category, and now I am doubling it again due to the limited number of entries.
All four of you have won, and each of you will receive a copy of FPS Creator Bonanza!!!
Congratulations!!!
I will get together with you guys in the next couple of days to get the info I need to pass to Rick.
I’ll send it all to him on Monday when he returns from their weekend. (No orders filled on weekends)
So, please be patient, and have some fun making more or finishing those maps whilst you wait.
