Has anyone noticed how people buy a large drink at the local McDonalds or Burger King, then sit down and have their meal, despite the fact that buying a small drink, not only saves money, but gives you no reduction in the amount of soda you get? I mean, I can understand the whole Medium-Large thing if you're going for a drive thru run, but people get the five dollar large drink for here, instead of getting a small drink and refiling it. I know it's cheap, but surely some buisnessman in the entire fast food franchise has thought "Hey, why are we letting people have free refills if it makes us lose money?"

Can you save the crew of LV21?

Most of the time, if you're ordering a combo, then getting a smaller drink means getting a smaller combo, and so your fries, etc. will also be a smaller size. To get around this you have to order everything separately, and in many cases it ends up being more expensive to get a small drink separately then just to get a medium or large combo.

I've read that the cost-per-ounce for a fountain soda is less than a penny, and most small size drinks start at a dollar. You'd have to drink over 100 ounces before they lost money. I don't think they care how many times you refill it.

McDonalds drinks are $1 for any size cup. So a bigger cup is no more expensive and allows us to get up from our seat for refills less often.

What restaurants are you referring to? I work at a Wendys, and you can get your combo with a large fry and a small drink, or a medium drink and a small fry, or whatever you like. all for just $5.99!
(lolz, I should get a bonus on my next paycheck for that. )

Not even. At any of the McDonalds I go to, the drinks are are different prices for different sizes.

You're probably mistaking them as Wendy's.

Everywhere I've been to it's only a $1.

Nope. The small fountain beverage where I go is $1.00, but the medium is something like $1.39.
Also, A Wendy's "small" cup is about the same size as a McDonald's "Medium" cup, and a McDonald's "small" is only slightly bigger than a Wendy's Kids meal size.

I have a devious mind.

So what you're effectively saying is that Wendy's contributes to obesity more than McDonald's?

Well, Over here in England neither McDonald's or Burger King do free refills so you do get more drink for ordering a large.

WRONG!!!!!!!!!

Cause a large drink at McDonald's is $1 thus meaning that you get more drink for a cheaper price at McD's.

I went to the US for 2 weeks and i got back yesterday

I remember going to Mcdonolds the first day getting there (after 13+ hours of flying and waiting in airports) And i worked out that, if you bought a average meal (Probs medium) it would be cheaper to get that than a medium burger and fries and a small drink. But as xplosys said, it only costs them a penny, so they dont care

Anyways, has anyone noticed, that the drink fountains have Part coke and then 1/3 carbonated water? Apparently they buy the syrup to make the soda direct from the company so they earn more, is this right?

macdonald's drinks are certainly a LOT more than $1 here at any exchange rate for the past several years. And we don't get refills. How is this fair? *sniff* only place i can think of here that does refills is costco, and pizza hut on their ice cream, i'm not sure about their drinks.

I don't eat at fast food places anyway, the smell in mcdonalds makes me feel ill. burger king isn't so bad.

I *never* order pop from McDonalds or any other restaurant. From McD's, when I go (a few times a year), I'll just get 2 burgers and a large black coffee. Or if I get a combo I'll substitute the pop for a coffee. I hate watered down nasty pop

Most restaurants order BIBS(bag in box's)...each one is one flavor of syrup used to make soda. The syrup is pumped through a line to the dispenser, and is mixed with CO2. Different company's have different ratios of CO2/syrup mixtures.

I don't know about you, but our BIBS that we buy from the vendor have no retail value, but just a cost. It's the cups that have a retail value. Our coffee is the real money maker. It only costs 10 cents to brew one pot. Our cheapest cup is $0.99. So even if we only sell one cup of coffee per pot, we're still making money.

I think it's some of the franchised mcdonalds that don't follow the advertised pricing. Even when their chicken nuggets used to be $1 I'd run into a location that still charged $1.50 for them. I think it's pretty lame that I can buy the same meal at multiple mcdonalds' and yet pay a different amount.

If you watch the pop as it comes out of the fountain you can actually see the difference between the CO2 and the syrup. One time I went to a Micky D's and went to get a pepsi. What was in my cup was not in fact pepsi, but pure carbonated water. Effing gross. All I got was a coupon for a free drink. But you only get the free drink if you buy another drink of equal or greater value. Now the only fast food I eat is A&W.

I hate McDonald's soft drinks. Not only do they taste watered down, but leave it long enough and it just tastes bad. Worse, around here they serve it with hollow ice cubes. I mean totally frozen outside with a cavity inside. I sometimes wonder how the heck they do that while realizing I'm not getting the amount of soft drink I paid for...

So I just buy the sandwich, the fries, and request for ice water.

In the beginning there was nothing. There'll be nothing in the end...

Yeah, here in Canada I believe you do get free refills, as well as the $1 drink deal. I find it interesting that you would say this, you do bring a good point, buying a smaller one and refilling it over and over again.

In Michigan, it's $1 drinks as well, at Mickey D's. Not sure if it works everywhere; but on some fountain machines, if you push the lever in ever so slightly...you'll get just syrup. Doing that for a few seconds before pushing it in all the way makes your drink stronger...which is awesome for Rootbeer!
