Hi I have DBP 4.1 and whe I patch it on 5 then my exe is about 2 MB bigger. I read that there are some dlls only renamen. Can I delete old ones? Is there some solution to this problem? Why we get debug versions of all dlls? Will be there any retail versions. I work in VisualC++ and I know how big difference is between debug and retail versions.

It's because the DBEngine is more closely knitted together to form a common code base for the commands to work, in other words, the new DLL's use common functionality from each other requiring your application to be bounded by more of the DLLs, hence the file size increase. Although the size is bigger, it will benefit in performance of your applications in general.

OK, but I write game in competition and there is 5 MB limit. And now I have 6.2MB exe without media.

And how about DEBUG versions?

I'm not fully sure on this, needs clarification, but your application only uses the debugging functionality when compiled in debug mode but I'm sure that this is isn't the case. IanM, Lee or Mike will be better of answering that part of your question.

The DLL's are compiled in release mode, not debug mode. The reason that they are called debug is because of the checking code that Lee and Mike included to ensure that DBPro programs don't do anything they shouldn't.

I have no more idea of when the release mode DLL's will be available than anyone else does.

OK, then all is OK. I though that you released debug-compiled dlls and distribute it to users for testing etc.

Remember to check the "Compress Attached Media" (even if you don't have any media included). This will significantly reduce the filesize by half or more.

i'd like to know why the DLLs are still so bloody large. 9.97MB in total -- that's just ridiculous. in a certain other language the equivalent to all these DLLs is under 1MB.

stop looking at me!

Its all the code to interface with DirectX, plus any debugging code still in there - dont except it to come down that much when its been removed - plus all the code that the commands convert to.
It also depends if these DLL's are dynamically or statically linked.

I asked rich about this last time and he said yes, we don't need to include an EXE but if they can't get it to compile they will drop your entry, which seems a litte unfair

So I'm going to offically submit a zip with all media and source, then provide an extra EXE to download should anything go wrong.

Just check compression in the DBpro IDE so that it will compress your EXE file. It probably will compress down to 2 Megabytes.

Yes you do. The retro compo was different but I'm not making the same mistake again. For the AW compo you MUST send me a compiled EXE. Check the rules list, it's on there.

The limit is 15 MB and a DBPro EXE with all DLLs will compress to a 3 MB zip file. That leaves plenty of room for media and extra code.

Cheers,

Rich

Especially if you use a good compression format. A solid archive RAR can hold two times as much, sometimes more, than a ZIP can!

(Thank you for allowing all compression formats Rich)

1) I put "if" we don't need include an EXE, it was not a statement
2) This was posted about 2 days before the rules were released
