So which game do you guys prefer: World of Warcraft or Oblivion. Oblivion is my favorite game of all time, but I've never played World of Warcraft so my vote doesn't count.

I'm talking about PC. But does platform really make that much of a difference?

Well..Oblivion is a story driven d20 adventure, and WoW is an online massive social network game.

it's hard to decide considering I love both..though recently I've dropped WoW, mostly because of money...but it's just started to become boring. I still play Oblivion, because it's fun to go through scenarios differently.

So if I had to decide, I'd choose Fallout 3. What? I'm addicted to it at the moment.

I definately have to get Fallout 3 when I have the time to play it. But the question is World of Warcraft or Oblivion, not Fallout. But Fallout is closer to Oblivion, so I'll count your vote as Oblivion.

And Oblivion isn't based on D20 rules...

...ya it is. All RPG's are derived from the basic's of D20.

Even WoW is based on D20 rules. The difference between game's and the table top is you don't see the dice rolls, save throws and other factors that determine all outcomes of the player.

I don't wish to argue the matter, so to stay on topic, if your going for price...Oblivion Gold is $20 on Steam last time I checked, but WoW is around $100+$15/month.

Each one gives you the same amount of play time..well, at least compared between advancing through the story of Oblivion versus getting your final Tier in Wow.

World of Warcraft all the way. You will find it much more rewarding than doing quests for dumb NPC's. I don't care how good of a conversation system you can put in place. It will never replace talking to another human. Also, for me, once I know I'm talking to an NPC. It ruins it.

Granted, you still do quests for NPC's in WOW, it's just more rewarding because you can do them with other people.

If you know any people who play WOW, play on their server. It's sort of tough to have a good time sometimes without friends.

I would say Oblivion. Not because I have anything against World of Warcraft, but just so that when your internet's busted, you can still have hours of fun. Just kidding. But I would say Oblivion.

Well, did you enjoy the gameplay in Oblivion more than in World of Warcraft or vice versa?

Oblivion has very few actual gameplay mechanics in common with the original Chainmail/AD&D rules: HP, level-ups, and that's pretty much it. I would know, I played it when it was new! And it was not originally D20s! The Elder Scrolls 1: Arena was actually released before D20s were introduced into the system.

> Sid Sinister

The quests in Oblivion were actually pretty good. Not the main quest or the Fighters' Guild, but other than that they were pretty good. Online games tend not to have very good quests (I'm using Everquest 2 as my standard of online, because that's pretty much the only one I've played recently). Yes you can have your friends doing stuff with you, but what is there to do with them if the quests are so hollow?

I prefer Paranoias way. In Paranoia only the GM rolls dice for everything using only a 20 sided dice. We're told to be better GMs to roll just for the heck of it and laugh about the results even if we're not rolling for anything at all. Makes the players even more Paranoid something is about to happen to them. It's sadistic but oh so fun.

I'm getting Fallout 3 as soon as I get a new video card... but for now my vote is still Oblivion.

Yeah, I also did that particular DM/GM trick in my D&D group. I did lots of evil DM things too, like this: I would kill a player character just for the hell of it, but then resurect the character so that I wouldn't be guilty of DM abuse. That meant I could kill them in whatever gruesome way I wanted, but they couldn't complain because they weren't really dead!

And I'm going to get Fallout 3 when I get my new computer, which I'll get in January.

Cool Killing players in Paranoia is standard practice... they come with 6 clones so they can die several times a mission by GM hand or by other players. Generally if it's funny they will die.

I'm really surprised more people aren't voting for World of Warcraft, considering it's popularity. I guess that just goes to show how truly awesome a game Oblivion is.

I'm surprised too. I bought Oblivion during the hype and got into it for a little while but I just couldn't finish it.

Actually, the main quest took me about 2 hours to finish my first time through. Once the final cinematic was over, I was like "Huh? Was that it?" But other quests (guilds, miscellaneous side quests) much more than made up for the disapointing main quest, and they infact managed to make Oblivion my favorite game of all time.

Fallout 3 may be better (and from what little I've read and seen of it, it probably is), but I haven't played it yet so I can't know for sure.

Oblivion +1.

They are both good games, but for very different reasons - mainly the quests I think. WoW quests usually just involve collecting so many or killing so many or a particular item or beast. Oblivion on the other hand has a much more adventure feel to it.

I think Oblivion is a great RPG, and WoW is a great MMORPG, and the two are vastly different genre's at the end of the day. WoW's appeal for me is running around the place having a laugh, I can't take it too seriously. If you saw my character on WoW you would think I was demented. I will say one thing, in WoW the people who make the game fun are the low level people, especially if they haven't played the game much. That's when it gets fun, when you go grinding a mine or something with a few noobs, or help in a quest that you know is easy as pie. I really have no time for people who pay to stand in the middle of iron forge with their epic mount and a look of smugness.

Fallout3 is better than them both though IMO, it's one of the only games that I enjoyed as much as I thought I would. The game had endless hype, and then to everyone's surprise it actually delivered. It's just sad that it's a cash cow these days, I mean 800 MS points for a few hours of game play is ridiculous. If you compare all three add-ons, together they cost the same as 2 games, like BF1942, Trials HD, Shadow Complex, or even Lost and Damned. Well in my opinion any of those games are a better buy than all 3 add-ons. It might just be the boost in quality we've had with XBL games in the last few months, but you have to question whether you want to play Fallout for another 3.5 hours or you want to play GTA4 for several hours. I've played BF1943 a lot, Trials HD a lot, and Lost and Damned a damned lot - if I had paid full price for these (£30 say) I wouldn't be disappointed. They simply should not make the 360 owners pay for add-ons designed for PC users. So many people just pirate these add-ons that the only truly stable income is through XBL, so 360 owners pay full whack.

Oblivion. But if Morrowind was an option I'd say Morrowind.

Morrowind with the Oblivion mod.

I think in the end, I'd choose WoW over Oblivion(if money permits). If I'm broke, then Oblivion. It's fun to play with other players, but I'm like Van that I don't take it seriously. When I got to endgame I couldn't stand being in the 20+ man raids. Everyone is so serious and if even one person messes up everyone goes into a baby fit with added swear words. It's embarrassing to listen to it...

So as long as your in a guild with others who are laid back, then you'll have loads of fun. RP realms are even better.

Though now I'm playing DDOU, I was a beta tester, so I received a bunch of free points. Just trying it out really.

I haven't played Oblivion, only the demo of WoW. Game is boring, like all RPGs.

My verdict on WoW is mediocre, but addictive, as most MMORPGs I find. I don't find them that interesting, whilst they might sometimes be a little addictive, but is over all boring for me, even WoW.

Oblivion on the other is a lot more interesting, the gameplay is really good and for every hour I spent, I enjoy, I must be nearing the 100 hour mark. As I play the PC version I take advantage of some great mods, including those that adds new towns and even new guilds - the expansion packs make it even better still.

For my vote would have to go to Oblivion.

+1 Oblivion for me, too. My furthest saving is 120 hours in. All the others add up to something like 50 hours. The only other games to come close in sucking-up-hours-of-my-life are Morrowind (easily 200+) and Diablo II (probably 100+; extremely replayable with Eastern Sun installed).

Oblivion is an amazing game, almost deserving of "masterpiece". The only thing that keeps it from earning that title is the fact that vanilla Oblivion (Oblivion w/o mods) is not nearly as fun as it is after adding Darn'sUI (I think?), the dragon mount (VERY useful), etc.

Yes, WoW classic might be $20, but then you have to buy the two expansions. Last I checked BC is $20 and WOTLK is still $60. So that's around $100. Then the $15/month subscription.

This is a quality vs. quantity question to me. I own and love both games, but while Oblivion might be a more 'delicate' experience, it just can't match the longevity of WoW. I mean, all these people think 100-200 hours ingame in Oblivion is a lot... I just checked the /played on ONE of my WoW characters, and I was shocked: 23 days and 4 hours (556 hours). And keep in mind, I have a few other characters with a couple of days ingame as well. And I think this is the case for most WoW players (I know most of my friends who play WoW have played a lot more than me ).

One of the most widely used arguments against WoW is the monthly fee. But for me, it's not a problem. I spend, what, 15$ a month on the game, and considering how much time I (and most other WoW players) spend ingame in a month, it suddenly becomes a very cheap game/hobby. A few years back I purchased a game a month because I simply couldn't squeeze more out of a game than one month, and the price of a new game is about 75-100$ here in Denmark, while WoW is ~17$ a month. In that perspective, WoW really is the cheaper option.

But financials put aside, WoW is a very repetitive game in the long run, and I don't see how one could play only that game, especially for extended amounts of time. I myself "supplement" with a few quality gaming experiences, and Oblivion is certainly one of those.

So to sum up, I can't chose one of these games over the other, as the experiences are so different. It's like comparing bungee jumping to watching a movie; the movie is a lot cheaper and lasts a lot longer, but can't compare to the thrill of jumping off a bridge

If WoW didn't have a monthly fee or was cheaper (like $5-10) I would play that over Oblivion, but it does have a fee so I would pick Oblivion.

Blah, expansions!

I doubt I'll ever buy a game that requires a monthly subscription, so if Oblivion doesn't have one then I'll vote for that. (though I never played it)

Oblivion is great! +1 for me

however, even though i think WoW is a terrible game, you can't really compare it to oblivion... the only thing they have in common is the RPG aspect, otherwise WoW is a MMO with a completely opposite gameplay structure (ex: combat is timer-based whereas oblivion is real-time; WoW has relatively linear quests whereas many of oblivion's are multi-directional)

Never played eather one. But I was never into MMORPGs. Me and my friends had this joke, that when you quit playing WoW, you will hear a vice saying:
"Congratulations! You just got a life." LoL. Lame, I know.

Maybe I should make this clear: which game's gameplay do you prefer? Which game do you enjoy actually playing more? Forget about the price. I know this is a completely subjective thing, but that's the whole reason why I'm curious. Pretty much, their both popular games so I was curious to see which one people enjoy the most.

I've stopped counting, there were too many ambiguous votes. People opinions aren't a contest anyway.

Still Oblivion for me. I'm mostly a solo player, and I got to a point on WoW where I couldn't advance because most enemies were too strong and I had to be in a group. This means spending hours looking for a group to help me out and then having them leave early for one reason or another.

And then there was that one time in another MMORPG where I died during a boss battle and the group leader decided that since I died I didn't deserve any of the loot the boss dropped. So now when I play WoW or any other MMORPG I never ask for loot as I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna get it anyway.

But I'm getting a bit off the subject here. I've played WoW for a bit and it's no fun waiting for a group just to do a quest you can't do yourself... X_X

There is a free online game that's a total ripoff of WOW called Runes of Magic. You can spend real money for items in the game but you don't have to.

I beta tested Runes of Magic and played up until recently, but it's really the same grind fest as WoW. I actually found it harder to befriend other players...for some reason they were either Korean or Mexican...no joke. The one thing I really liked though was the duel class system, and being able to magically upgrade armor(which can cost you a fortune if you want maxed out stats).

Right now I'm really into Dungeons and Dragons Online Unlimited. Which I beta tested and is now out. It's free(with payed content)..though the big difference is, in other P2P games you have to literally spend your money to get special 'coins' to buy premium items, you can actually earn these special 'coins' in-game in DADOU. Also because I beta tested and stuff I got enough free points to buy a new character class. It actually feels like a D&D game too, with the DM narrative and the whole gameplay, quit fun really.
