I recently decided to reformat an old computer (Dell XPS 600) to remove a lot of the junk that piled up on it over the years. I reformatted the hard drive and ran the system disk (“Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with Update Rollup 2”). Everything went well and installed correctly. However I am unable to get my internet connection working. I have a cable broadband connection via Comcast that I know works (using it to post this). The internet connect wizard says that xp should automatically connect to such a setup but it will not. The double computer icon that should be on the sidebar and say whether or it’s connected to the internet are missing. I think there must be some app or driver that I’m missing.

Any help would be appreciated. If you need any extra information just say so.

Thanks,
Mike

Try looking in control panel. there should be the Internet Options somewhere in there. Mess with that a bit.

I have a devious mind.

I believe that model is running an nVidia nForce chipset, which means you're going to have to download some drivers to get it to work. Fortunately it's all available as a big download from nVidia's site, so if you know what version of nForce you're on, then you're gold.

Thanks, I'll try that later to day when I have time.

I installed the nVidia drivers from their site along with all “urgent” drivers from dell (http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=&SystemID=XPS_PNT_P4_DX) but it still is not connecting. When I diagnose the problem I get the following log…

Network Adapter Diagnostic
Network Location Detected
Info Using Home Internet Connection
Network Adapter Identification
Info Network Connection: Name=1394 Connection, Divice 1394 Net Adapter, Media Type=LAN, SubMediaType=1394
Warn This machine does not have any installed network adapters. The required network divice drivers may have not been installed.
Info Redirecting user to support call

So it would seem I'm still missing some driver but I don't know which one. The Device Manager is showing Yellow Question Marks next to 'Multimedia Audio Controller' and 'Other PCI bridge Device' both under 'Other Devices'. But neither of those sound like network drivers.

Thanks for the help so far,
Mike
