I cant post on the forum with IE8. I keep getting this message in red on the forum every time I try to post.

Quote: "Unknown System Error while posting reply. Sorry but I have to abort now. Please try again later."

I can post with IE8 just fine at work, but not at home...
I downloaded firefox just to post from home.

Could it be the AVG internet security or some utility on my computer, or is there a specific IE setting I need to look at?

Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, where the heck is the ceiling.

I could be mistaken, but that error message sounds an awful lot like a phoney. That is an exact duplicate of the message, yes? 'Cause if it is, "Sorry but I have to abort" sounds reeaaly strange. Seems like a computer virus of some sort.

thats the default error message of the appolo forums if a posting fails, its not a virus, well...

it sounds like you have something wrong in ie8's config at home, it *may* be a virus, but it could also just be they way you set it up, or a plugin you installed, or a feature you chose *not* to install.

It's puzzling, I can post in other forums with IE8 but not on the TGC. I'll keep disabling IE add-ons to see if any does the trick.

Perhaps you could try a decent web browser rather than something integrated into your OS?

My job requires IE, so its easier for me to use one browser rather than jumping back and forth like Im doing now to post here

Have you tried upgrading/downgrading the version of IE8 you are using at home?

I had a few problems recently processing web forms in Firefox, turned out it was a dodgy update.

Play with this. You might find some setting that brings it back to life.

As in bit. 32 or 64 bit. I think.

I'm so sick of people using that as an excuse. IE works fine, 8 seemed faster than 7 to me also.

You'll also notice many companies make employees stick to using IE. Reasons could be either they don't want to support 3rd party applications or they have web-based applications that require IE, mostly due to ActiveX controls as Nex mentioned.

Yeah, 32\64 bit. I was testing them because I've had problems with the 64 bit version in the past and was wondering if that was the case here...apparently not.

Correct on both counts. I work for a defense contractor, and IE is a department of defense mandate. They only support windows, and IE.

Back to my issue here. I tried Compatibility view but it did not help. I tried resetting the browser and I got the same thing.

I'm starting to suspect something external to IE. I'll look into my internet security utilities, and registry mechanic maybe something got crossed linked somewhere.

Really one would think that a company that's a defense contractor wouldn't allow employees to access the internet to do anything but company business for fear of a security leak.

I fell in love with fallout ever since the first one. now I have fallout 3 disc in my computer waiting for the next expansion. they've been short and quick to beat...

My cube is not on a secure floor because I dont deal with classified material, so I enjoy my filtered internet (it's not so bad).

Secure floors have their own network, no internet, no cell phones, no CD-Rs, no usb flash drives, etc.. (total lock down) I can't program in that kind of environment.

We can has Government secrets now plz? Lol, jk.

I haven't messed with IE in a while. The only time I use it is when Im using my school's wireless on my laptop. Due to something with the way the wireless is set up, you have to go through hell and back to get FF to work.

A few questions for you, trogdor:
What version of Windows are you running at home?
What version of Windows are they running at your workplace?
Have you run a virus scan?
Do you have any ad/popup blockers on?
Do you have automatic updates on? (If you're on Vista. If I recall correctly, XP doesn't have that.)

I suggest you check the settings of IE at work, then compare them to your settings at home.

I have a devious mind.

*facepalm*

Windows had automatic updates since 98 with the Critical Update Notification Tool which downloaded and applied security critical patches in the background!

Well, EXCUUUUUUUSE me, Princess!
What I meant was that before Vista, it didn't have the same Windows update utility as it has now.

Yes, but I thought that it couldn't be turned off in pre-vista. In Vista, you have the option of it asking you when to download and/or install the updates.

Yes, I run one every two weeks

IE blocker is off, Google bar blocker is off, dont know if AVG has one I'll look there too

Quote: "

Yes, auto update is on but it asks before installing. I always let it install the updates though.

I noticed it eversince I went to IE8 but I also upgraded to AVG internet security, got rid of Nero because it started crashing my system, and installed latest Roxio, all that in the same week, so I dont know what did it.

Last night I tried reinstalling IE8 but that did not help.

Is there another forum out there that uses the same software as this forum? I would like to test and see why am I getting those messages because clearly TGC forum does not like what my system is sending. Maybe if I knew what was going out to the forum it'll help me narrow my search to the causing software on my computer.

No. It was written specifically for use on TGC in the hope of reducing spam and malware.

It has to be some other software or a utility I have at home.
This post is using IE8 at work, and it works fine.

Just out of curiosity, run HijackThis and see what things might be installed into IE. It's possible there was something there you weren't even aware of that's causing issues with IE after the upgrade.

That's the only one I'd question. Can you disable that plugin and retry? Check your java plugin is up to date. Not saying these are actually related to the problem, but who knows.

I wonder what it did not like about this forum.

I had more control over the AVG components in the older versions.

This new one doesnt seem to give me the low level control that I need. I turned off the AVG webbrowser security but it still blocked TGC forum posts. it wasnt until I told hijackthis to remove its keys from the registry that it actually stopped...

All I know is I'm good to go from home again
