Not very well straight out of the box. They need some modification which I am one who has no clue of how or why.

First you need to convert the .3ds files to .x if you have that version,otherwise just use MagicFPS or other apps to make entities.

That is correct. A tiny bit of them have been FPSC-ready.

meh, sounds like too much more work than its worth, I'd just make my own.

Is blender good at that?

A lot of people have used and are still using blender. Again, that is not my expertise. I think there are some tutorials around the FPSC forums (here and in the models forum) that are certainly worth looking at.
