Thought I'd call up for help from here since there a few techy guys here. Yesterday I upgraded my PC to 3gb ram but it seems to have a vendetta against me. When the bios goes to vista, I log in and the system shuts down without warning. Then, I switch it on again and it makes an overheat sound yet all my 5 fans are connected securely. Then, it does the same thing over and over again until the psu is reset then starts from the beginning. Any help?

Could be some dodgy memory, or you could be trying to use the wrong simms.

You really need to consider how you upgrade memory, usually I would say replace it all at once, even if you have a 2gb simm, and are adding another 2gb, you have to ensure that both simms are identical in spec at least.

If you have un-matched memory then I'd bet 1 kidney that is the problem.

Riiight...so it must be the ram then, I had a 2gb module In the first dimm pair slot and a 1gb in the other pair totalling 3gb so that's the problem then?

Yeah, I'd say that is likely - try taking out that 1gb and boot up again.

Really you should try and get the same ram as your 2gb simm, or ideally upgrade the ram totally to 4gb from 2 identical 2gb simms, maybe you could sell on your 2gb simm to help cover the cost.

I've mixed 1 and 2gb sticks before without trouble. But some motherboards expect ram in specific banks. such as leave bank 1 empty unless 2-4 are filled already.

Also, if you add something to your PC and that's when trouble begins, common sense would dictate the problem probably lies there.

Sorry for the bump :L it's been a month or so since the last diagnosis of my PC and to be honest, I've given up. The heatsink Is knackered (runs at 15rpm instead of 2000 or so) which was why the system kept shutting down as it ran at around 125°C. BS piece of crap. I want to buy another heatsink but I literally can't be asked to spend another £20 on something that'll only last a few weeks -.- thus means that I won't be on TGC much anymore except for times when I want to go on it by my iPod, so, yeah, I'll see you guys sometime in the future and best of luck to everyone at TGC!

So, with a heavy heart, goodbye for now, and hope to see you soon.
