How does Valve being a game developer interfere with that idea?
If anything, they pioneered it to pretty close to what you are talking about. More developers should jump on the Steam bandwagon.

If it's taken outside of Valve's hands so it's not in "Valve's interest", then it will just be in some other companies interest. I would
definitely not be open to a subscription.
