How much are you paying for the supposed 1.4kbps bandwith you're getting? If you're paying more than 5 cents for it, you should have switch ISP's years ago.

Then pretend my computer explodes from overuse or something like that and I lose all of my steam files on the internal HDD. If I copy and paste all of those Steam files into the Steam folder on another computer so that they are supposedly back to the original location but on a different computer. Will all of my games still work"

Why would you do that though? You can just login with the same account on a different machine and re-download the games as normal - it lets you do that with no questions asked (I don't think it rings alarm bells on Valve's end unless the account is being used and re-used by lots of different IPs)

No.

@Jeku/Sid/Mahoney
I think Steam provides a great service, but I would like to see a company set up which provides the same services without also being a game developer. I think thats where I have a problem with it, it's a conflict of interest. It's in the users interest that every single game they own can be integrated with the system, so you can take your *complete* game library with you everywhere.

At least, thats how I view Steam, I want it to be my personal library of games so that I don't have to keep physical copies of everything.

I would be willing to pay a subscription fee for such a service, to cover the costs of maintenance that Steam covers through sales of Valve's games (that's Valve's interest), so I'm not entirely trying to freeload here. I'm just saying that Steam is far from flawless

It's supposed to be at about 512kbps when it's not capped (although is usually at about 172kbps) and nowadays when it's capped it goes down to 1.4kbps for some reason instead of it going to 64kbps like it should. It is very annoying, their support people always blame our connection and we always have to wait at least an hour before they pick up. They are really slack, but my dad refuses to switch to something else.

How does Valve being a game developer interfere with that idea?

If anything, they pioneered it to pretty close to what you are talking about. More developers should jump on the Steam bandwagon.

If it's taken outside of Valve's hands so it's not in "Valve's interest", then it will just be in some other companies interest. I would definitely not be open to a subscription.

@Toasty: Ouch man, that sucks. Maybe keep nagging your Dad about it and he'll switch. Either that, or get him hooked on something that requires a faster connection. Necessity is the mother of all invention! Although in this case I guess it's already been invented.

What ISP? And why does he refuse? Doesn't it get on his nerves that it's less than dial-up speeds?

I'm in Australia so you probably haven't heard of it but anyway, we're with Soul internet.

It does, but when I bring this to light he always retorts by accusing me of wasting the 5gb download limit, which caps it to 1.4kbps... which is kinda rubbish, because I checked my download list, my recently DLed Steam games and Xbox Live downloads, and have only downloaded 4gb.

Tell your dad about TPG internet.

Super cheap (for Australia ) or Dodo, or Internode. They all do better deals than you seem to be getting. On Internode, xbox live usage (playing and downloads) doesn't get counted in your usage either, it's part of their freezone.
