I tried really hard to resolve this problem myself, so I apologize if it's a dumb question or if it has been answered before; I couldn't find it in the forums, and I searched for the past hour.

So, I just purchased the DarkGame Studio Bonanza pack and haven't gotten to play around much; I opened up DarkBasic Classic yesterday just to look at it, ran the tutorial from the booklet, and it was fine.

Today I opened up DBPro for the first time and went through the tutorial (from the booklet) just to see how everything is supposed to look so I'll know when I do something wrong, but . . . I didn't get that far. When I attempted the tutorial, the media file h-alien hivebrain-attack1.x came up black. (print screen is attached, which includes the code in the bg)

I attempted to resolve by triple-checking that everything is up to date (NVIDIA for GEForce 8800GT, DirectX9.0c because I'm using XP, I have the 7.4 for DBPro, etc. and so forth). I tried changing settings back and forth to make sure something wasn't wrong in there, so if there is a problem with settings it's possibly a combination of things since I only tested one thing at a time. Then I tried other media files to make sure it wasn't just that one, but they all come up black, although the animations and everything else look fine.

I probably missed something somewhere, but I've been trying to fix this for hours and decided that sacrificing my pride was better than sacrificing more time on something that probably has an easy fix (since I haven't seen anyone else with that problem yet). Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I'm no expert on model formats, but looking in the x file, it seems to be referencing a bmp file. But the supplied texture is in DDS format. So you would need to add the texture manually using LOAD IMAGE and TEXTURE OBJECT.

* face palm *

Thanks! Epic tutorial fail, there! They mention nothing of loading image or texture in the tutorial, yet show a screenshot of the example of what you're supposed to get with the texture on it in the book; should probably be updated in any future releases.

I looked at the help files for syntax, found the image in the DarkMatter folders, moved it to my Media file from the tutorial, and got it working myself from your advice, as you can see from the attached image. Sweet meat!

Ah. Now I can relax knowing that it wasn't me just being crazy, and now I know a little more about DBPro. In the future, I'll question directions more if they don't work right away. I thought it was a bit too easy that everything would be packaged in one file; I should have trusted my gut!
