I have installed the SDK correctly(I believe from what I've read), and I just wanted to test out that everything worked. So I created a 2d game through the wizard and didn't add any code. When I go to build the game, it say there is a build error:
"c:\program files (x86)\the game creators\dark gdk\include\darksdkcamera.h(16) : fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'd3dx9.h': No such file or directory"

I have vista which uses dx10, but I installed the dx9 SDK as the program told me to before installation. How do I get it to build without errors?

You need to install the august 2007 version, I don't know if it is the same as the dx 9 version, here a link to the 2007 version:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=529f03be-1339-48c4-bd5a-8506e5acf571&displaylang=en

Hope that this will solve the error.

That is what the GDK installer told me as well. I downloaded and installed it before the GDK would let me proceed.

It turns out that it cannot find any d3dx9 files in "c:\program files (x86)\the game creators\dark gdk\include\".

I have reinstalled the Aug07 SDK and it still gives me the same error.

my 2cents

I run vista as well and everything went off without a hitch the first time around but to my knowledge i dont have dx10 at all.

The error is telling you EXACTLY what is wrong...

Google d3dx9.h for a download

figure out where it needs to be

put it there..

I googled it for you and found this
http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread105507.html#

A post on daniweb inwhich somone suffered the same issue.

If that doesn't work you could try to reinstall the SDK and just hit next next next etc ( do not choose custom directory )

Did you use the links provided on the install page for the gdk on this site? maybe you accidently downloaded the wrong version while thinking you had the correct version

I finally did that and after downloading numerous files that were not included, those errors went away. Sadly, I am getting new errors though.

I am highly confused as to what happened...but now it works. Sorry for the trouble.
