Here's my first shot at texturing, I also made the model. It's probably got some polys where polys don't belong?

It's my first texture for a model btw. EDIT: I guess I already said that...btw, it's my first shot at texturing.

c&c welcome on both model and texture, if anyone has any recommendations on how to improve the texture I'm game!

@Henry, thanks! I added some scratches/dark spots to the texture, I can't seem to get a good grunge effect though .

I'm using 3ds Max and Photoshop. DJ, how did you get that grunge? It looks quite good, although I probably wouldn't put it over the whole texture.

Thanks!

Looks good, very neatly put together.

One thing about these things though, they corrode and rust like nobodies business - don't be afraid to dirty it up a bit, I'd actually use a bit of dirt or rust around the details to bring them out - maybe even paint it green then chip and corrode that layer away. They would usually be painted, covered in scratches and corrosion etc etc... so it's a good opportunity to push your texturing practice I think.

Well, what you could do: Make a new layer, take a brush and pick some different colors and put it at places where you want your dirt to be, next aply the filter Noise to it and change the bars until it becomes as you will like it, then drop the opacity of the layer, do this several time with different colors, different noise settings and different places and you will get some nice effects.

Okay, I had some more time to work on the texture. This time I've focused mainly on adding rust, I still have to work out how I'm going to make some paint chips.

Give me some honest feedback . If it doesn't look good it's a simple matter of deleting a few layers, I want to get this looking good!

Thanks for the comments guys! I'm reading and trying to apply each one! I'm learning a lot from this! Oh and I will post up the .PSD when I release the model!

Edit: Added texture image.

I think the original looked great, but the new texture makes it really stand out! Great Job!

It looks good but it needs a few shiny scratches like when you scratch off the paint and only see the bare metal,on the edges that would look nice.

What you can also do: When it rains, it goes down, so a few lines of a little bit smudged pain would look nice, i think. Just duplicate the base color layer and smudge at 5 percent and do that a little bit.

But still, this is far better then i could do.

Here's a nice scratch painting tut: http://racer445.com/pages/tutorials/scratch-painting.php

Nice ammo box BTW.
Best.

It's very good to know all links to Youtube that contain Rick-rolls. Sadly I don't.

Bake some ambient occlusion into it, it looks pretty flat as it is. Not like a light source is hitting it, but just some darkening around denser areas.

Okay, I've decided I'm spending WAY to much time on this model. I'm going to modify it a little (probably Monday), then that will be it.

I'd just change the font of the writing but the overall model and the non-text part of the texture is outstanding.

Looking great, just corrode away a paint layer and it'll be golden. But also please don't use burn tool (you havn't but just for the future), there are few scenarios where you can make the burn tool look good.
