i suppose i forgot to mention that i centered it. the problem is that it puts it on the wrong side of the model.

Select the object, go to the hierarchy tab and click affect pivot only, then underneath center to object. Re apply the sym modifier and it should work, with the correct axis selected.

yeah it takes some getting used to aside from the tutorials that come with max ( which i advise doing) here is a list of excellent tutorial sources to get you started off, no particular order but it should keep you occupied for ... well ages

http://www.free3dtutorials.com/

http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/autodesk-3ds-max/how-to-create-a-video-game-dumpster-the-complete-current-gen-workflow/

http://www.3dtotal.com/

Textureing but still valuable

http://www.poopinmymouth.com/tutorial/tutorial.htm

http://www.infinitee-designs.com/Tutorials-3DSMax-1.htm

Also Turbosquid.com has an excellent 3ds max forum with some solid members that know what they are doing

i actually found the tutorials that came with it less then useful. and rather confusing...(i quickly went past them on fail 3) although when i get the modeling down better i may give the animation and camera tutorial a look at. im curios to see if it is better then C4D or not.
