The learning curve isn't bad for Vienna. I own both Vienna Special Edition and EWQL Gold Complete and I like them both for different reasons. Vienna sounds real with legato. Gold Complete has the natural reverb. Vienna can be used in applications other than large orchestra's because the reverb is subtle. Gold complete has more articulations. The Solo instruments in Gold are no where near as good as Vienna's. It all depends on what you want to do. Typical game scoring? I would probably pick EWQL Gold Complete. Now, if your going to be using it for applications other than that (Pop music for example)... I would take Vienna. Your best bet would be, buy one of them then save up and get the other also. That way, you get everything you need and the best of both worlds.
EDIT: I just listened to Skillet's "Rebirthing". The staccato could be pulled off with Gold but you would also need to mix Vienna's legato with Gold to emulate the connected notes. If you did that, it would sound awsome!
Try things that you normally wouldn't... you might find the answer.
