Since Upgrade 5, I have been reading that DBPro now requires DirectX 9.0b. However, when I finally upgraded to Upgrade 5 with DX 9.0b, it now says "Runtime Error 1512 - Display is not supported by available hardware" whenever I try and add a 3d object. Does my graphics card have to be fully DX 9.0b capable (i.e. GeForce FX 5900, Radeon 9800)? I have an SiS 650 agp card built into my system (I know, it's crap) but it is DirectX 8.1 compatible. I assumed as long as I didn't use any special 9.0 features I could still use it. Was I wrong?

Are you trying to use a 24-bit graphics mode ? That will cause it. DX9 should work on most DX8 compatiable machines.

I downloaded the Alien demo (for the competition) and tried to run it. It gave me that message. Then I downloaded the AlienWare Demo Version of DBPro, and even making a this will do the same thing:

Try going here and downloading the latest driver for your video chip and Operating system.

I am currently chasing some of these new issues brought about by the step up to DirectX 9.0b. Please send me an email with as much info, screenshots, source code, media and step-by-step accounts as you can dream up to help me help you.

In the main, DirectX 9.0b will work on modern cards, much like DirectX 8.1 did. Upgrading to DX9.0b drivers is vital, updating your 3D card drivers is not as strict, though highly recommended!

actually i'd say this is more likely to be another SiS blacklist, like the 632x series ... they just don't make very good cards i'm afriad (especially considering $50 says its an onboard version which would be just 10x worse really)

...regardless of how good the card is, support should be there for everything above minimum system requirments, hence Lee's bug hunt .

actually not in this case... support actually squarely lies in several factors.

a)has it been allocated enough ram?
b)doest SiS themselves have support for DirectX9
c)like the GeForceFX and Radeon 97/9800 cards he might be using Windows98/ME and trying to DirectX9 in which case you may not be able to use DirectX9 ... and is the within the bug outlines of the DirectX9 readme

there are a whole bunch of reasons of what it could be, and my money is on the card & windows/directx interaction rather than darkbasic pro's fault ... infact with SiS i'd almost guarentee it

I have an original Geforce 3 with 64 megs of ram and it can run everything on DBPro.

Sis chips are really not that good quality.

I can't wait until LongHorn so that Microsoft will dump all of those crappy chips and support modern ones with actual ram on them.

These el-chepo Emachine computers with the cheapest chips you can find is getting on my nerves.

Thanks for all the response!

Lee, I'll send you as much info as I can when I get the chance so you can further the hunt. It's not a big problem for me, cause I have another comp with a GeForce FX that works just fine. I just wanted to make sure this wasn't a problem with every older video card (would kinda put a damper on selling anything I made).

Raven: "$50 says its an onboard version which would be just 10x worse really)"

Yep, it's onboard. I allocated 32 megs of RAM for it, so I'm pretty sure it's just the driver or a crappy chipset.

"b)doest SiS themselves have support for DirectX9"

I was under the impression that as long as I didn't use any DX9-specific features, any DirectX 8 card would still work.
