3 Dimensional Chat / Smoothing in Blender Looks Corrupted

So, I have been noticing some big problems with my models lately. More specifically, when I try to smooth it or apply textures to it. It seems that sometimes the side of the face that gets the texture applied, switches around. Take this quick model of a plant pot as an example.

Notice that the smoothed version looks really corrupted. The black parts of the mesh are the faces that are flipped around and if I applied a texture to those faces, the image would be on the opposite side that you are viewing and would become transparent. This way, you could only see the texture from the inside of the model.

What I'm asking is if there is some sort of hotkey or button I can press, a process I can go through, or if there is some sort of technical problem (doubt it) with my version of Blender(2.49a) that I must fix to switch the faces back to the side that I am viewing. If you want the model in the above screenshot, I can include it. Any help at all is appreciated!

Hey man, have you tried recalculating the normals? In edit-mode, select all the faces and press "CTRL-N" and it should pop up a button that says "Recalculate Normals Outside" or something similar. Click it, and you should fix the problem. If not...hmm...

EDIT - Also, with smoothing a mesh like that, I would suggest that you don't smooth any flat edges, like the bottom of the pot. Your call, it's more of a visual thing.

Hope it helps!

That worked perfectly for the texturing problem! But didn't exactly fix the smoothing problem. It helped mostly but there are still one or two faces that are darker than the rest lingering around there. But I'm guessing that cannot be helped.

Now I'm going to print out your avatar 10,000 times and use it as tile for my bathroom. Consider this a thank you.

Oh, and thanks for the tip on not smoothing the whole mesh. I'll keep that in mind in future models.

Yeah, you get those faces when you try to smooth a bunch of triangles, as you are at the bottom of your mesh I believe.

The good thing is, with a nice texture applied, a lot of these problems go away
