when this contest is over, can we still use that cool alien model in our own games?

At last! the rules, and I don't think anyone can complain. Customise animations...customise the polys, pick any genre of game.

Can't wait to get started...just hope I get time to finish!

I've been started for a week now You will finish this time - unlike the last one where we got about 1 month and a patch that mucked up everything half way through!

Considering that many proably won't finish their projects in time (myself included unless I seriously buckle down) can we assume that the model is pd and free for us to release our games as comercial projects if we wish? Hope so cos I got a great (but ambitious) idea

At least we have 3 months this time instead of just over one (if memory serves). I plan to finish the game well befor ethen, and spend the rest of the time adding "shine" (if you haven't read the dbp tutorials you won't get that) and making loads of levels with, hopefully, a level editor.

You had 2 months last time, but Patch 4.1 sort of messed it up. This time you've a straight 3 months with no major interruptions along the way.

Cheers,

Rich

That's just the sort of news I wanted to hear Nothing major.

However I think because we're (only just) still in august people will consider it "summer" and with the compo ending new year, they'll be lead into a falso sense of security having all of "autumn" and most of "winter" too.

However when written as 4 months the time quickly seems shorter

It's 4 months, but put it this way - do NOT leave it to the last minute! The games that did well last time were the ones that people on the forums got to test, give feedback on, etc. That all takes time. We (TGC) will not be testing games for you in this compo, it's your responsibility. Allow a good few weeks for this.

Cheers,

Rich

Yeah, last time I seriously screwed myself, I was doing a multiplayer only game, and left it to th last minute to put in the multiplayer stuff! I spent way too much time on coding the base engine.

This time I already have a good chuck of the engine ready to go, and hopefully should be ready for testing at the end of October.

I also have a lot of the components already written from other projects - bullet engine, particle effects etc it's just a matter of plugging them in

In fact, the bullets engine I'm using has been used in about 4 games previous to this

You will be able to see how to particle effects are done in a tutorial I am writing on smoke effects (mental note: MUST finish! I'll email you soon rich) which includes all code.

Thank you very much Rich. I already planned to use a few weeks for testing and stuff. I already wondered why 3 months, but I understand it fully now.

yeah you know what'll be the kicker is most of you guys finding some sucker with a Pentium4 3.0ghz & GeForceFX5900ti even if just for compatibility means.

that said i'd be interested to see if anyone makes a game with Shaders in it

Can you add animations to the alien? Or modify the animations?

it says in the rules you can

@Raven: My bro's computer is pretty close to that, 2.4Ghrz P4, 256MB Ram, 64MB Intel Graphics,(well since its probably the strongest computer I have access to, I'd beta test anything on it) so I think I'll test my game on that. If its a little choppy, I know it'll run fine on the 3.0Ghrz.

Personally, i wouldnt compare Intec graphics to anything close to a geforce fx.

is it onboard?

nwc, i'll give you a small example of something...
my AthlonXP 1200+ w/GeForceFX 5200 64mb will show a ball on a 50x50 matrix in DBP @ 300fps
the same machine with my GeForceFX 5900ti 256mb will do this at 3,200fps
with a 3ghz processor particularly a Pentium4 no doubt with HyperThreading ... you'll probably be looking at the same test producing almost 4-5k frames/sec.

ALOT of the graphical power from such a powerful machine comes from the GeForceFX card.
to give you some idea of that speed difference in technical terms, my FX5200 (which isn't a slouch!) is capable of pushing 63million vertices/sec which is roughly 250,000 triangles/60fps
the FX5900ti is capable of 365million vertices/sec which is just about 2.5million triangles/60fps

this is no doubt why it quite clearly states to ask you to find someone to test this game on, DarkBASIC developers won't have to worry much because although yes it runs faster ... you really can't get that much speed out of it, it just becomes more and more stable frame rate the faster the system you have.

but pro developers will definately have to watch out and develop with a much faster system in mind.

Heh, I've got a great idea, I just don't know if I'll finish in time. Now, I just gotta go download the alien and see what I need to add or modify.(The animations I mean)

A book? I hate book. Book is stupid.
