Hello fellow game makers,

Here is another contest that rewards the winner with a copy of The FPSC Bonanza, which includes FPS Creator and 8 Model Packs.
(Click here for more details about The FPSC Bonanza)

Overview

The Thug wants to go trick or treating this year but he has no costume to wear, so he needs your help to make a cool costume.
This contest will be a texturing contest that will involve the use of a custom layer that you create to overlay on TGC’s stock Thug textures.
You will only be submitting your layer and NOT the stock texture or a remake of it. (The layer has to be 100% your creation)
By submitting only a layer that is 100% your own creation, we can avoid any copyright breaches of TGC’s textures.
These layers will be submitted here on the TGC forums in this thread, and since they will only work over TGC Thug Textures the layers will only benefit FPSC users.

Rules *

1) Only one entry per person.
2) Entry must be submitted as a .PNG file by 11:59 pm EST October 30, 2009.
3) Entry must be a layer that is 100% your own creation and not a retexture of TGC’s media.
4) Entry must be compatible with the stock Thug’s UV Mapping. (Do not submit textures for other stock characters)
5) Entry may or may not be a total cover up (your choice), but remember to make necessary areas transparent if it is an overlay.
6) Entry must include a screen shot of the Thug wearing the costume in game. (.PNG or .JPG)
7) By submitting your entry here, you agree that the entry will be considered in the ‘Public Domain’ and thus free for all to use and modify in the future.
8) Any entry that violates any of the above rules will be disqualified.

* The rules are subject to change, in the event that I overlooked something.

Prizes **

First Place:
The winner who creates the coolest costume for the Thug (I'm the judge) will receive a copy of FPS Creator Bonanza, which includes the full version of FPS Creator and 8 Model Packs.
The best costume will also receive a model pack donated by Cyborg ART.

Second Place:
The next best costume (2nd place) will also receive a model pack donated by Cyborg ART.

** I ordered these FPSC Bonanzas for my contests before the tutorials ran out, at which time they were replaced with mp25 in the bonanza offer.
That means the winner will receive one of the following FPSC Bonanza offers depending on the availability of tutorial supplies...
    (A) FPSC Bonanza = Full FPSC + Tutorial Discs + 8 Model Packs
    (B) FPSC Bonanza = Full FPSC + 9 Model Packs (includes mp 25)

Thanks Cyborg ART for generously offering your prizes for first and second place!

Misc
More details are coming soon, and maybe even a video showing the process of creating and saving a Layer for the Thug in Paint.NET...

...okay guys, here is the link to the video on YouTube.
You will notice that I used a watermark to protect TGC's texture for the video. (yours will not show that, its only in the video)
Use a backup of your stock texture for a background reference instead of the original texture file.
That way you will not accidentally overwrite the stock file when saving.

Entries
NOTE: Entry is not validated until the sceen shot and PNG layer have been posted.
Once you post either I will add your name to the list of potential entries.
Once you have posted both requirements, then I will add the date next to your name.

THE ENTRY DEADLINE HAS PAST
The deadline for submitting your entry has past.
We had a total of three entries for this Thug Layer Halloween Costume Contest.

And the Winner is...

1st Place = Zombie
2nd Place = The Joker
3rd Place = Mario

Here is how I scored it...

Zombie
Originality:
Costume:

The Joker
Originality:
Costume:

Mario
Originality:
Costume:

=======================================================

Zombie    =

The Joker =

Mario       =

As you can see, the Zombie and the Joker, both received 5 stars.
However, the Zombie won the tie, because it is an original design and not a proprietary character whose copyrights are owned by someone else.
Therefore, The Joker and Mario are not as original in design, so the Zombie wins the tie for its creativity factor.

I want to say that all of you did a great job, and that I hope everyone had fun.
I'll be sending the winners an email for your shipping info to be passed to TGC on Monday.
So, please wait for the email from me, and do not post the info here.

As, for the prizes offered by Cyborg ART... the winners will need to contact him for thoses prizes as I will not be involved in that delivery process.

Thanks again everyone!

All of you guys did a fantastic job!!!

Edit
By the way, since the first and second place was a tie... I am going to up the prizes.

Now, first and second place win a copy of the FPSC Bonanza.

As for Mario in third, I have to think of a consolation prize because I think you deserve some props for entering so early.
So, let me think of something for the prize GamerX, unless you have a suggestion of something. (you already have FPSC licensed don't you?)

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

Quote: "Could you post an example of what you mean though? I dont quite get it."

No problem.
I made a short video, but I hurried so I made one boo boo.
Use a backup of your stock texture for a background reference and not the original texture.
That way you will not accidentally overwrite your stock texture when saving.

Quote: "I know I sound like a total newbie but...

...what is an overlay in regard to a texture?"

Nevermind my terminology because I call things what I can remember.
To me, an overlay would be a layer that lays over the original texture so that it only changes part of it.
The stock texture is used as a background for the layer over it and part of it shows through the overlays transparent parts.

Here is a screen shot of an eyepatch that I whipped up for the video example... (see attachment)

I'll add the video to the first post.

This allows for multiple layers to be used which creates a mix and match capability for texture accessories...

The purse/backback layer overlays the coat layer
the coat layer overlays the sweater layer
the sweater layer overlays the shirt layer
the shirt layer overlays the jewelry layer
the lewelry layer overlays the tattoo layer
the tattoo layer overlays the skin layer

and so on if you want to get into the flesh and bones too

This way you can mix and match accessories in countless combinations by adding different layers.

Oh I forgot blood and open wounds layers which could be placed over shirts or coats or whatever layer you have on top, so it cuts through that stuff.

You can stack layers for various transparencies and effects too, then flatten them into single layers than can be stacked with more.
Like I said the layer thing is endless.

Anyway,
Anyone can open a stock Thug texture, and by adding a new layer they can copy/paste your overlay onto it and save the result as a new modified stock texture.
Once you save the layer with the stock background, then you have the new texture to use for your in game characters.
This way, people can share their texture modifications without distributing TGC textures.

Quote: "Wow, the thug has a very bad UV map... which part is the front of the chest? "

I thought he has a pretty straight forward layout.
Play around with it and you will find out which is front and which is back.
The cool thing about the Thug is that he has multiple textures all laid out the same, so these Halloween costume layers can be applied to any or all of them.
The Thug is also the stock character with the fewest distinctive features on his mesh, unlike the sci-fi characters' gadgets or the soldiers' helmets.
So, to me he is the most dynamic stock character as far as re-texturing goes.

This contest doesn't need to be stickied, so it's okay.
I was really surprised when my first contest was stickied.
The first contest was for new users only, so the sticky was nice to get their attention.
This contest is open to everyone, so there should be enough contestants who can find it on their own.
They have plenty of stickies at the moment anyway, so it's all good.

Looks great, but don't forget to post the PNG of the layer.

Quote: "Question, will this do?"

Yes, but you need to post a PNG of the layer as well.

I have included the PNG for the eyepatch that I made for the video as an example...
(if you view it then it looks like a white background but that is a transparency as you will see if you download the PNG and open it in Paint.NET)

I'll update the first post with a list of entries once you have posted the PNGs.

That is very generous of you, thanks.
So, that is a pack for first and a pack for second?
I'll edit the first post now.

Looks great Gamer X, except for one thing...

It is not 100% your creation, because you used the shirt, shoes, and hands from the stock texture.
(remember, the layer is going to be placed over the stock texture, so there is no need to apply any of the original texture to the layer)

If you want to retain the shading and lighting on the originial texture, then try making solid colors like the red but then edit the opacity of the layer.
That way the original texture will show through so you can capture the wrinkles in the clothes etc of the original stock texture.

You will need create each section as separate layers so you can only make the parts you want semi-transparent and the others parts solid.
Once you have your layers like you want them then you can flatten them for a single layer for the contest entry.

Attached is a screenshot showing the Properties Button on the Layers Window and the Slider and Value for the Opacity of the layer.
Play around with that Layer Opacity, so you can eliminate using any of TGC's texture.

Please, review the overview section...
"This contest will be a texturing contest that will involve the use of a custom layer that you create to overlay on TGC’s stock Thug textures."

You should be using a Stock (unmodified) Thug Texture as the background for your layer as shown in the video example.
That way, your costume layer will look the same for anyone that uses it. (the custom layer should be the whole costume)

Quote: "So I dunno how ill get around that."

Like they say... 'Back to the drawing board.'
You can modify the layer you have to match the changes you made to the stock texture, so the new layer will work on a stock texture.
Or...
You could start over from scratch, but that would be more work.

There is still plenty of time to enter.

Neither PNG entered contains part of the original stock texture, so they are both valid entries.

You can see the outline of the shirt, but that is an outline not the original texture.
It was created by using a cropping tool like a magic wand, but it is not the original texture.
You have to recreate the outline in order to color the skin different than the shirt.

If you download their PNG entries (which do not contain any of TGC's texture) then you can create the costume yourself.
You must of course already have a stock thug texture, and then you use that as a background under the downloaded layers.

If you want to have even more fun, then add the zombie over the mario. 'Look Mario, it's Luigi!

My texture is neary ready, I only have one problem.

When I copy the layer-texture and insert it into the thug texture as a new layer, it gets inserted centered and I have to manually put it into the right place.

Both are .png files and the layer-texture has everything in the right place when I open it on its own.

EDIT: I tried to put a border around the texture-layer but it still gets centered....

It sounds like they are different sizes.
The stock Thug textures are 1024 x 1024, so your layer should be the same.
If it is smaller then it will not fit right.

No thats not the problem, it is 1024 x 1024. I work with PSP 9, not paint.net though.

However - I still got about 6 hours left (I guess - here in europe its allready past midnight)to solve the problem.

EDIT: I fixed it in simply filling the whole layer with 1% transparency (=nearly unnoticable)black colour

I have to drop our, sorry. That thug texture is /&%$§"! awfull to work with. For 3 hours I tried to get a round picture 0nto his chest but the mesh is just slicing through it, no matter where how I bend it.....

Besides that I not only learned to work with layers (thanks to this competion) but also that I HATE it from the bottom of my heart.

Looking forward to learn the results

That looks great, NAACP gotme.

Is that 100% your creation? (you didn't copy/paste that jacket from somewhere?)
I only ask because it looks so nice.

I'll Update the first post now to reflect yor entry, but I'll list it as pending until I get a confirmation from you that your PNG overlay is 100% your creation.

EDIT: and if this violates any of the contest terms, tell me and i'll take it down"

Very nice N&S maps, etc. (top notch effort - thanks)
However, it looks as if you have part of TGC's texture in there.
Even if you have permission from TGC, it still violates the rules of the contest.
The whole idea behind submitting layers was to avoid posting any of TGC's media.
Please, remove the ZIP from the contest thread.

I'm sorry to hear that you decided to drop out. (your costume looks really nice)

I'm sorry to hear that too, but at least you learned something.
Not many things are easy on the first try, so you just have to keep at it and it will get better.

I'll be back with the results later.

Thanks everyone
