Welcome to The Very Best of the Best: 2009!

This new annual competition seeks to highlight the absolute Best of the Best....of the Best of the Best. Each year every entry into the BOTB will be judged and evaluated, to see which FPSCreator Developer has what it takes to be #1 in all the land!

In order for an entry to be valid for consideration in the VBOTB (yes, a shiny new acronym); it has to be approved and entered into the BOTB archives for that specific year (starting with entries for 2009).

On November 25th, of each calendar year, entries will no longer be permitted (for that year's consideration). At that point, judging will commence. In the past; it has been one person (KeithC), who has judged which entry will be given the opportunity to join the BOTB...however, that will not be the case with the VBOTB. Though the 2009 Competition will still be judged by KeithC (as it is set to close soon); there is an additional criteria that will have an influence on the outcome: Community Vote

The judging will take place in the following manner:

The Community (Popular) Vote will be accomplished via a Poll (the same that TGC has used recently). After the cutoff date for accepted entries (November 25th); a poll will be generated with all the BOTB entries for that year. The percentage that each entry receives, will turn into a point value (ie., 45% = 45 points). Those points will then be added to the final Judge’s points assigned to the specified entry, for a total point value. The entry with the highest point value, wins. It’s that simple. The results of the poll will be published after the winner is declared.
The Judge’s Criteria Sheet will include multiple categories (which will each have a maximum point value assigned) of factors that will be judged. Some of these may include: Lighting, Level Layout, Frame Rate, Artificial Intelligence, Custom Media, Custom Sound/Music, Scripting, Originality, Over-all “Fun-Factor”, etc. A final category sheet/listing will be published shortly after this announcement is made. A similar sheet will be posted in the thread containing the “Popular Vote” Poll; to be used as a “guide” for the community to go by when making their decision.

PRIZES

I’m looking to make this an Annual Event (once a year, every year). As such; I’ve asked TGC to consider a prize donation to the winner of the VBOTB. They have graciously donated the following to the winner of the VBOTB: 2009:

- A $250 TGC Voucher
- 4,000 Store Points

In addition; the Winner will be featured in the TGC January Newsletter, and get a unique BOTB Badge (reflecting the year of the win) that will replace their current BOTB Badge (supplied by BiggAdd).
___________________________________________________________________

There will be an official thread in the Showcase Board, along with a Discussion thread (and an official announcement in next month's Newsletter), at a later date. This is the place to ask questions.

Judges needed for the 2010 year!

The 2009 year will be judged solely by KeithC (as the deadline is too tight). However, judges are needed for future VBOTB competitions. A potential judge should have the time to be able to go over (play) numerous entries into the BOTB, as well as be able to adhere to the Criteria Sheet given them and be fair-minded. We don’t need someone that is going to disappear part way through the actual judging process. There are an unspecified number of slots open, but we won’t be taking too many. If you think you have the time to spare, and want to help out; please contact KeithC (via e-mail).
Judges do not need to be familiar with FPSCreator (or be an active developer for that matter…gamers are always welcome to apply), though it is suggested that you play a few BOTB entries to get a feel for what is possible with the engine.

Wow!
By a $250 voucher do you mean where we can get $250 worth of TGC software?

Let me also stress that there will be NO exceptions to the deadline.

Well, I took out the mod .ini file. The first level still crashes my system (system has recovered from a serious error...); so I won't be trying it again. Lost something I was working on.

Yep; it is weird. When I'm done working on something (and in no danger of losing it, lol), I'll try the other levels that had the graphical issues.

Incidentally; when I got to the second floor of the first level (with the boarded-up hole in the wall), I had no idea how to proceed. I tried blowing up/shooting the boards over the hole, and opening the doors with the enter key. Ran all over the two floors...and nothing?

if you go up the stairs you see 2 doors, if you go trough the right one ( not straight) and walk in the room, the other one will open

You should think about putting that in some sort of instructions. In the future, people who don't use FPSC may be judging this.

It's a good thing I got interested in making one more game with FPSC. Those prizes look pretty sharp. I'm really happy with the way this new game is turning out. I think it's much better than Emergence: Infiltration.

Oh dear

I would probably try at this (even though I for sure would lose) but I can't build games because of some dumb bug that no update can fix.

Sweet. I'm going to get to work on making a releasable version
of my latest project. I'm going to re-vamp it and try to get the
most interactivity out of the engine as possible.

that's an amzing chance

I have a couple of questions:

- can non-english games be submited? (basic texts will be translated to english such as the menu and in-game text but not videos and sounds)

- can the TGC Voucher prize be used to buy model packs or it's just for the softwares listed in the shop page?

Yes; as long as anything pertinent to game-play is in English (clues, codes, etc.).

Quote: "- can the TGC Voucher prize be used to buy model packs or it's just for the softwares listed in the shop page?"

Yes, you can buy model packs from the regular TGC Store (not the store that uses points...for that you will be using the 4,000 points in the prize package).

Oh and can the $250 be replaced with one of TGC's products? (The X Quad editor would be nice. )

First off, he said no exceptions to the deadline, so it would appear you're out of luck for this year. Secondly, the $250 is not cash. It comes in the form of a TGC gift card for their store. That's what TGC Voucher means. Which means - Yes. You can get the XQuad Editor (if it's less than $250. I'm not sure)

I might be wrong here, but I don't think we're supposed to view this as a contest. This is an insanely prestigious award amongst FPSC users, and, in my opinion, should be treated as such. It may be just me, but I don't see this as some prize that I can just go out and grab. It's something that takes months of work, and really requires some amazing stuff to be done with FPSC. Stuff that hasn't been done before. It's ingenuity and sheer brilliance that will win this award - not this "contest". But, like I said, that's just how I see it.

Gunn3r's right, this is not a contest. This is an award given the individual(s) of the highest skill using FPSC. Detailed level design, optimization, media, sounds, gameplay... all are taken into account here.

Though... I gotta say, with the time limit given and a prize list and the fact that only certain projects are taken into account, it does give the appearance of a contest.

The one and only,

- The Prize list is an acknowledgment of the developer's hard work. It also a way to entice others to improve their development and show the community what can be done with FPSCreator...push it to it's limits!

- The cut-off of 2009 entries was done because their needed to be a starting point, and more advances have been made since the BOTB was conceived and started a few years back.

The requirements are posted for all to see here:

Step 1: BOTB Entry

After acceptance into the BOTB...

Step 2: VBOTB

I voted for the warehouse. It had some nice explorable levels too. the design could've been a little better, but it was still a good experience as a whole. edged out pioneering because of it's ally. although the free-roamness in pioneering made it tough to choose.
