Hey guys this came just out of curiosity.
Please, do not start a flame thread, and please respect other people's opinions on bands, and no saying - "ew they suck".
Alright, to start off:

My favourite artist is Taylor Swift.
My favourite bands are Simple Plan, Hedley, and Marianas Trench.

-Adrian

I love Taylor Swift. She's awesome.

Favorite Artist - Toby Keith
Favorite Duo - Brooks and Dunn (I hope to God they don't split like they say they are.)
Favorite Band - Either Zac Brown Band or The Lost Trailers.

That's some good country right there.

Signature's are stupid.

Good call Venge on the Opeth and Tool thing.

There are so many and it constantly changes. Back into slipknot & Dr. dre at the moment. Saw Bellowhead the other day as well and they were amazing live. Overall probably

Bands:
The Bled; Steely Dan; Sikth; The Black Dahlia Murder; Death Cab For Cutie; Biffy Clyro; Radiohead (Kid A and Hail To The Thief).

Artists:
Mike Oldfield. Few other people deserve honourable mentions though. Cab Calloway's gotta be up there.

And then I love Mozart's requiem. One of the best pieces of music ever written.

METALLICA!

I happen to be listening to the song "Blackened" as I write this post.

I don't really listen to individual artists, but someone gave me a Joe Satriani anthology album for Christmass a few years ago. I wish I could play guitar like him!

And I also don't listen to any individual artist. Well, at least not enough to call them a favorite.

People's tastes in music change, people learn about bands that they did not know about beofre, new bands pop up, old bands release new albums, etc. So I don't think that there are too many of these threads.

I like muse, and I have recently been checking out a band called Porcupine Tree, who are really good; can't believe I only just found out about them.

@Tom J: Porcupine Tree are pretty damn good. You a tool fan? They're a little - beefier?, but you might like them if you like Porcupine Tree. Don't know the best word to describe the difference. But they're still kind of rock/metal mixed with prog.

@Herakles: I never really listen to solo guitarists, so it's a bit of a weird coincidence that I'm listening to Satch's Love Thing as I read it (listen to maybe three guitar-lead songs a year). I always thought the whole thing was a bit arrogant, but you can't deny Satch has the feeling. Starting to come round to some others actually since Steve Vai came and did a tutorial at my college last year.

I haven't listened to much Tool, although I've been meaning to get round to it. From what I understand they are more like hard rock/metal than PT.

It's funny really, because I like modern prog stuff but not so much the old prog like Yes and Genesis... I suppose it is just a generation thing

METALLICA! [3]

Also Samael, NiN (does it count a favourite artist?), Ministry (Al could be with Trent on "fav artists" list), Electric Wizard, Dream Theater and many more...

I recommend you watch this video if you haven't yet(Schism), a pretty good example of what their music is like. One of their better songs in my opinion, though the entire 10,000 Days album is amazing.

Well, the genre is a subjective thing. But the musicians in Metallica have (or at least had) real skill. Listen to the solo in Ride the Lighting (the song not the album, though the album is awesome too) and you'll understand why Metallica is so great.

How to piss off a Metallica fan in one short step, by Mad Nightmare.

Some bands I've been listening to lately:

The Absence, Enter Shikari, Gwen Stacy, Haggard, He is Legend, Protest the Hero, Skindred, Sonic Syndicate

Well, I've never heard any of the songs by Avenged Sevenfold. But if they just use a lot of alternate picking, then they're no good. Any schmuck who's been playing guitar for at least one year can do alternate picking quite effortlessly. It sounds impressive, but if you're a guitarist, you'll know that it's not so impressive. I don't know if that's all Avenged Sevenfold does, because I haven't heard any of their songs, but if they do then they're not very skilled.

I'm not pissed off, I'm just a guitarist trying to clarify what defines skilled playing. Alternate picking is where you pick up and down really fast. It's used quite frequently in riffs because it sounds cool, it's just not that hard to play.

Uh, they don't even do it the cool way... Listen to the riff in the Exodus song "A Lesson In Violence" to hear the cool way. But "cool" is a subjective thing. Listen to the Metallica song Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) to hear some truly skilled playing. Granted it's all bass guitar not regular guitar, but it's played pretty much the same way.

I think Metallica is the "cool" est band out there. I mean, wicked lyrics, skilled members, and awesome riffs... Doesn't get much cooler than that.

Plus James Hetfield is a badass.

Haha, define cool.
It's based on opinion I guess, but to me a good song doesn't really depend on anything, but if I like listening to it or not.

Actually, I watched some interview with Metallica. Every one of them agreed that James and Kirk are the two most sentimental members of the whole band! So much for the whole "badass" image, huh.

@Venge: Schism's an amazing song. One of the few I can play on the bass (except for the violining - would have to change two volume knobs at once and get much better tone with them both up for the rest of the song). Can play most of vicarious and the pot too, but then I balance it up with Britney, Girls Aloud and the Underworld Theme from Mario.
