Now I know a lot about computers don't get me wrong but i don't know if there's a way to put a password on a folder so that i'm the only one who can get into it. I want complete privacy from anyone going on my computer, granted no one does do on my computer but me but i still want to protect my files from anyone going on my PC. so i ask you is there a way to put a password on a folder then make that folder not show thumb nails of the pictures inside? also want it to not show up when i search for certain files. any suggestiong will be appreciated.

/wonders what type of pictures are being put in this folder

Lock your computer when you aren't using it?

We used this briefly in my networking class. I think it might do what you want (except instead of passwording a folder, you password a virtual drive iirc?)

Oh, those pictures...
Well, like said, why not just go to the windows login screen (chose "switch users") and have a password on your accont?
Of course, the files could still be accessed if your sister's curious enough to actually hook up the harddrive to another machine. Or navigate to them from another account on said computer, of course.
Perhaps you could block other users from seeing certain folders by making them not administrators and setting up some restrictions, I don't know.

If you feel guilty and afraid of what other people will think, I suggest you go to the source of the problem.

Put the files in an archive, which can be password restricted.

Best way to hide files? Enable file extensions for known formats and rename the .jpgs to .bin or something, and the actual filename to a string of seemingly random characters. Rename to .jpg to view, rename to .bin to hide.

Sounds like Nex has hidden his image collection before.

Although, I wrote a program that would've corrected your renamed files automatically by searching for file headers. What can I say, I was a digital forensics major.

But most USB keys only go up to 16GB unless you pay lots of money.

There are a million plus encryption/decryption programs out there that'll hide all those files you don't want your family to see.

I too would recommend TrueCrypt. It's basically a mounted hard disk self-contained into a file that you can place anywhere, with or without any extension you choose. It's impossible to guess which file is the volume, and you can password protect it anyway. It's useful, and I use it all the time for all my stuff that I don't want to get in the wrongs hands if my computer is ever stolen.

There is no native support for password protecting a folder on a standalone PC, not since windows2000 - what happens these days are permissions are set - so you might have a password on your user profile so only you can access the PC. Then you log out when done, and your sis has to log in, and only see's what she is allowed to see.

But this is impractical. For one thing, why would your sister log you out and herself in if all she wanted to do was look something up with Google - just would not happen. You could add a password to the screen saver, but that's less than ideal. Then you have the problem of what your parents think about you having a protected profile that they cant check.

No, password protecting a folder was the best idea, but M$ got rid.

What you could do now is just hide that folder, find it in explorer, right click it, then select Hidden at the bottom. That would hopefully keep your sister out, as long as you had the 'show hidden items' enabled. Still not ideal though, makes it a bit annoying to search it yourself.

So I think the best advise has already been given, use an encryption and backup sorta application to take care of it for you, especially if you would hate to loose these pictures. If it is just albino amputee dwarf porn, then you might be better off loosing it .

This is my favorite reply on this thread, as it implies that 16 GB is not at all enough.

But slightly (and only slightly) more on topic: I agree that encryption is your best bet. Compression is a pain, and USB keys are just plain not fun.

I was going to say "It'd be pretty sad for someone to have 16GB of porn." but I decided that it sounds kind of offensive and that I wouldn't say it. But, now that Mahoney has said it...

16GB of porn is pathetic!

You could always encrypt your files and put them on here:

Maybe seven or eight of those would store all the necessary data

Who wouldn't have a hard time fitting such a category into just 16GB? You'd have to really squeeze all the bytes out of the files using advanced compression. Also, you should fluff its Garfield if you know what I'm saying.

Stuff all the images in a random folder that you cant imagine anyone going in, like a config folder in a random installation in your program files.

Its a good day to do what has to be done by me and help my brother to defeat the enemies

Or even better: combine the "folder tree so deep no one will keep going down" and "that has to be the most boring folder name I've ever seen" tactics. Make a folder in an obscure location titled something like "Mac tools" (on a Windows PC, of course), then make it ten folders deep, all more and more boring titles.

The include folders of any C/++ installation are a total mess. Good place to hide stuff.

Pretty sure certain media players scan the entire HDD for media files, so it doesn't matter where you hide them. You'll get found out sooner or later.

The other way is to just install another drive and put all the files on it. If you want to look at the files plug in the power to the drive and turn on the computer... when you're done turn off the computer and unplug it. No amount of snooping on the main HD will find anything since it's all on a disconnected drive.

I use truecrypt for protecting all of my projects, but it isn't really the encryption I am after, it allows me a way to make a root drive letter for only development work, and it allows me to backup just one file, rather than lots of files.
Truecrypt does offer fairly good encryption apparently.

I love the way this thread slowly descended into a conversation about how to securely hide porn, as if everyone considers it a personal problem.

I'd like to point out I'm not like you guys though. Mine is on playback 24/7. Oh yeah .. oh yeah .. oh yeaaaaah ....

Exactly the reason I use TrueCrypt. I mount it as M: and work on my projects from there. When I'm done, I unmount it and back up the single file somewhere. It's really great to have everything self-contained and hidden. If the computer is stolen it's virtually impossible to know which file is the TrueCrypt volume, and even if they found it it's password protected.
