just a shot in the dark but Win XP is a memory hog, how much Ram do you have?

if its less then 512mb I would bet thats it.

there is no windows OS that can cleanly utilize memory higher than 256mb, but now we are splitting hairs so I digress

Yeah, I only got a 128 Ram and it works great.

i download it and you know what it's working fine now.
i got winxp and win98 with 500mhz and 128 ram. Little slow, but doesn't freeze on startup.

its prolly an open gl lib problem, download them from the site.

new macs can tolerate 8 gig of ram. SGI machines can possess even more.

rustler i think your only assuming some low end x86 architecture as the whole base to computers
