I'm trying to build 3d models of the various planets in the Solar System, but I'm struggling with the texture mapping. The image I'm using was downloaded from the Celestia Motherlode site, a low-res version is attached.

The image appears to have been made using cylindrical projection, but when I try to apply it to a sphere (using LithUnwrap, cylindrical projection, no spacing, uncapped) the north and south poles turn to a disjointed blur.

I know that a few people on here have made solar system simulators - if anyone could send me a UV-mapped sphere model, I'd be most grateful!

I did serach for it, but the one I found referred to a Photoshop/Gimp plugin to change and distort the 2D texture to fit the sphere - I'd like to leave the texture unchanged, and just have a sphere display it proprly. Is it even possible?

What kind of sphere are you using? I'm assuming not like a geo-sphere, but a sphere where the top and bottom conjoin into points with triangles.

For me, I can use a default sphere in a program like MilkShape 3D, and it works perfectly using the kind of textures that you posted, without having to specify any further UV mapping.

As far as I know, in the newsletter and on Spore, they use 6 different textures for the planets...
