To edit the 'skin' of characters (I think you mean textures), you'll need some sort of paint program, like GIMP 2.0, Photoshop, Paint.NET, etc.

To edit the FPI files, open them with notepad or download Flatlander's FPI Edit Pad.

I've seen it all. Except for myself ever not failing at something.

If you want to edit the texture, you will want to find the .dds, .png, or .tga files. All of these can be opened in photoshop.

Triple post, nice

Anyway, if you can't open a .dds with photoshop, then google a program called Paint.NET. It's my favorite tool to use for editing textures.

Actually you dont even need to make a new .dds file after the texture work.

I usually backup the original texture and .dds in an "Original" folder and then dump my new texture as .tga or .png into the appropriate folder. FPSC kindly creates the .dds when I next time build my game - including the test game!
