GeoCities has been disconnected
Famous for scrolling/flashing/spinning text, "this site under construction" banners, and guestbooks.

xkcd has dedicated it's site to the death of a beloved service.

RIP GeoCities

Hahahaha I like the xkcd interpretation of your average Geocities page.

You're heartless.

And no Phaelax it just went underground. cocooning itself in a protective shroud of blinking backgrounds, illegible text and stock icons, it burrowed away in a dank corner of the interweb, to live out the rest of it's days unmolested by vacuous pre-teens wishing to fill it's pages with "LOOK! PUPPIEZ! I MADE PICTURE!!" and Barbie icons.

Rest In Peace geocities. You will be missed. We'll always remember your custom cursors, badly copied code and colour schemes as designed by Ray Charles... ("Well if I can't read it, no-one can")

Geocities was a good place for amateur web developers to have a place to play around, but it's not to be taken seriously. All Geocities sites are horrible, and have no sense of accomplishment or style. I would piss on the grave of Geocities if I wasn't so sure it would splash on the grave of actual good services that have died.

Geocities was web1.0 where I remember the internet being made up of lots of little fan sites and stuff like that. Now it's facebook this and youtube that and everyone comes to the same big sites.

Geocities pages were great hubs for useless stuff. No longer will their be a "star trek tng midi site" or similar!

I'd love to know how much hard drive space is being recuperated after removing all those millions of pages. Should be interesting to see how the search engines handle removing millions of links, too

Now that's just harsh man. Part of Geocities' charm was it's determination to cause seizures in epileptics with every backdrop, it's users inability to understand just because it's sparkly doesn't mean it looks amazing, and it's dislike of any sort of style. It had it's own thing going and I respect it for that.

It's not so much Geocities, it was people who used it. Geocities allowed you to upload your own custom made pages, but many chose to use the site builder or templates instead. Then they go on public forums, announce their "sites". I don't mind people learning, but please, don't claim your site is the "best" or the "official" place for something unless you have some decent work to show for it.

@demons breath

I love your sig, sorry that just had to be said.

As for geocities death, i think that alot of people are to see it die. It was in a sense spam, thier were a few jewels that justified its exsistance but mainly a kindergarden equivilent of web creation.

That was in essence it's charm. It was supposed to be rubbish. People who made decent, helpful, legible sites using it were missing the entire point. If there's not a cursor with tinkerbell on it, it's not a true Geocities page.

I'm apparently a total n00b and have no idea what Geocities is. If I'm under 20, does that make it OK?

Geocities was a website where you could get your own free page. It had sort of the "make your own page" style things where you didn't have to learn HTML, you just had to have really bad design skills. The majority of pages on there were entirely rubbish. You're not missing out. Although

No. Your life is obviously empty and without meaning.

As far as I can tell, 12 year old's should know, because it was mostly that sort of age which seemed to be building the pages.

I used to frequent 4chan, until all the newf*g's came in and started posting the same crap over and over. After that, I simply left. I witnessed the birth of some great memes, and the deaths of many.

4chan actually sucked anyway. You could never find the damn topic you posted in, and most of the time you forgot what you posted.

I also remember when Anonymous was feared, now people just laugh at the idiots who go raging about nothing.
